English lit gcse

Hey yall, im year 11 about to do mocks and i would like to do a level eng lit as i truly love it and want to pursue it for uni hopefully

Im currently working on a grade 6 ish but on my last " an inspector calls " essay i was 1 off an 8 because the question was about Sheila so yk i had to do my girl some justice
Anyway i feel like i can rememeber the quotes and i do use good vocab but im really struggling on how to structure an essay as i feel like the one my teacher gives hs is very basic and it aims just for a 4 and i obvs dont want that. I have tried to use PEEL and all the other ones but nothing seems to work.

Ny teacher gives us annoted quotations and a little mini paragraph of Grade 9 stuff but i feel like all the PEEL structures do not match the annotations that he gives us if that makes sense

For my exams i am AQA and im studying : a christmas carol and macbeth for paper 1 and for paper 2 im doing an inspector calls and power and conflict poetry

Thankkss

I get what you mean when you say the PEEL structure doesn't match the annotations - I feel like often the points that teachers teach you are too complex to properly convey with the PEEL structure. I'd say don't get too caught up in trying to follow the PEEL structure if that comes at a detriment to your analysis. For A-level English lit, the first thing that teachers said was to forget about PEEL or PEAZ or whatever and just write however feels natural as that structure is mainly taught as a starting point into writing essays - just make sure to always have strong topic sentences to begin each paragraph. As long as your argument is organised well, there isn't a specific structure you need to follow. As for structuring the whole essay, I'd usually aim for 3 paragraphs with points that develop chronologically within the text. (I got a 9 at gcse and A at a-level btw)

I hope this helps and good luck on your exams!!

My method was to have a Google doc for each text with all the quotes written out, and every like week I'd make a new page for each one and just write out all the quotes I could remember then go back and add in any that I missed/correct mistakes. The repetition of writing them out over and over as well as recalling them helped me remember a lot of quotes (I learned way too many)
