What is it like to study at UoR in terms of lifestyle and student life?

I am trying to decide whether I should choose Reading Uni for biomedical science or Portsmouth.

Good afternoon,

It's great to hear you are thinking of studying Biomedical Sciences.

Choosing a university depends on what you want from your university experience. Every student wants something slightly different, such as lecture style or exam vs no exams. I always recommend deciding what you want from your university and writing a list. You can compare the two universities to your own criteria; this means the university will be the best fit for you.

The University of Reading has a vast campus with many Study areas, ensuring students always have somewhere to revise. Additionally, many student blogs highlight their opinions on the university facilities, such as UoR Secret Garden, Making the Most of the Library, and Making the Most out of the Careers Service. Similarly, you can find blogs about the local town, exploring the Reading town centre, five best day trips, and Natural spots in Reading.

Generally speaking, the town centre has a lot to do, including sports activities like bowling. There are also great places to eat out, and there are also a lot of shops in the local town. There is a nightclub on campus called the 3sixty; you can see the events that occur there. There is also a selection of Bars & Pubs on campus. Alternatively, the Reading Town Centre has an array of pubs and clubs.

At the University of Reading, there is an ambassador scheme via unibuddy, where prospective students can message current uni of Reading students. The student ambassador for biomedical sciences is Kanniz, who you can find here. She can answer any questions you may have and provide another perspective on the course.

We currently have a thread for 2025 applicants, where new students can find and talk to each other. Similarly, the student ambassadors have posted key tips for joining the university.

When I was applying to the university, I found it very helpful to attend an Open Day; however, for students who live far away or do not have access to an Open Day, there is a Virtual Tour, which prospective students can look at from their homes. I highly recommend you have a look at the Virtual Tour; it provides an insight to the campus.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions; please let us know if you have any other questions.

All the best,
Ella
