So why D and not B? I thought momentum conserved regardless or elasticity?

Screenshot 2025-02-25 110457.pngFrom the same mark scheme, I thought because E=mc^2, specially for high mass, you require high energies?

Its slightly ambiguous. If the block of wood was free to move, so the bullet and wood is a closed system, then momentum would be conserved. But if the block of wood is fixed, or even if another re tarding force acts on it, then momentum is not conserved as youre only considering a part of the overall system (open system). The latter is the usual/real world case.

I was astonished this “outdated” specimen has not updated their answer. The 2 questions (if I don’t remember wrongly) had been raised by other quite some time ago.

I would encourage that you check with your teacher as they may have the latest version.

For question 3, you can see it appear in a document as shown in the link and the answer is indeed B.

As for question 6, it is a modified question from a past year paper Jun 2011 and Jun 2015.

Jun 2011

Jun 2015

Both questions have the same answer as C. The two past years' questions support your answer.
