Student finance speech therapy

I am considering retraining as a speech and language therapist. I have a BSc in Psychology for which I got a student loan in 2005. I then completed a Post grad diploma in Mental Health Nursing in 2014 which I believe was NHS funded but I don't think I got any other student finance for this.

I would be looking at doing the 2 year masters course or possibly part time. Could anyone advise what funding I would be able to get? NHS learning support fund? Student finance maintence/tuition fee loan. I've tried looking at the eligibility information but with previous degrees and student finance it's so confusing!

Thank you!

Hi there, what is the name of the university you are thinking of applying to? Please confirm the exact course title? Would the Full Time or Part Time course be preferable? How many years is the course in total? When are you planning to start your studies? Thank you, Stephen.

Hi it is University of Sheffield, the course would be MMedSci Speech and language therapy. I believe it is 2 years full time and 3 years part time. I would probably consider starting either 2026/2027. I am unsure on full time/part time yet, it would very much depend on the funding.
Many thanks for your help

Hi there,

We can't confirm finance for 26/27 academic year, as this is too far in advance. Based on the current year, the university only show this course as part time 3 years and comes under postgraduate funding. This means the finance we offer is Postgraduate Master's Loan currently of £12,471. This is paid directly to the student over the duration of the course, and up to the student what they use this for. You can find more details on Postgraduate Master's funding here https://www.gov.uk/masters-loan/what-youll-get

Thanks,
Claire

Hi, thank you so much for this. Do you know if this would be amount you would get if doing a part time course or would it be less/pro rata for this?

Also do you know if I would be eligible for the NHS learning support fund as well as the postgraduate masters loan?

Many thanks for your help

The master's finance is the same amount whether its full time or part time. It's not means tested and this is maximum anyone eligible can apply for.

Students are not eligible for Postgraduates Master's funding where they are eligible to apply for a healthcare bursary or are in receipt of a social work bursary* for any of the following;

National Health Service (NHS)

Department of Health (DoH)

Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS)

We don't deal with the NHS Loan Support Fund. You can find more information on their website here https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-learning-support-fund-lsf

Thanks,
Claire

If you study SLT full time on an undergraduate or a pre-registration masters course, you would be eligible for undergraduate funding (both tuition fee and maintenance loans).

Check with Sheffield and ask why the full-time masters course isn't appearing as an exception course on SFE's database. It might just be that someone has failed to register it properly.

As it is a uni in England, you will be able to apply to the NHS LSF too for the annual training grant and other benefits.
