Life at Newcastle uni?

I'm currently studying at a campus uni in quite a small city (feels like more of a village than a city tbh) and have been seriously considering taking a year out and reapplying elsewhere. I really think I would want to reapply at a city uni as I completely glossed over them when I first applied bc I was dead set on going to a campus uni - however I have now realised that this is not the experience I wanted at all.

Basically, I was wondering what student life is like at Newcastle uni? Does it being a city uni mean there's less of a communal feel to the uni and is it harder to make friends because of it? What are the societies and the student union like/ are they any good? Is the accommodation affordable/ in a nice area/ decent quality? What's the city itself like - is it clean/ are the people friendly/ does it feel safe?

Any insight is appreciated

Hi @Anonymous #1!

I recently graduated from Newcastle Uni and I had an amazing student experience! We are a top 5 Student City, and share the city centre with Northumbria so the city is very student-heavy. This means that there is lots to get involved with as a student and student deals make the city more affordable than it already is! We do have a main campus right in the city centre so you can still experience campus life despite being in a city. In terms of safety, I never felt unsafe in Newcastle but we have security on-campus and at our accommodations for peace of mind.

Northern cities generally have a lower cost of living across the board and in terms of accommodation it fully depends on your preference. More popular student areas like Jesmond will cost more in rent but the city is well connected through buses, metros and it is a small walkable city. In my final year, I was paying £90PW in rent on the West side of the city - this came with a cleaner and I was right beside a supermarket!

We have over 160 societies to suit everyone's needs but if you would like to set up your own you just need 15 people to want to join. We also have over 60 sports clubs you can join at beginner or competitive level, so there are lots of opportunities to make friends and find community.

I hope this has been helpful but if you have any other questions about the university or Newcastle please do ask!

Thanks 💫
