have i been diagnosed with depression??

i started sertraline 2 weeks ago, when i went to my gp, she did this small questionnaire (phq-9 i think) which i scored for severe depression. i am just so confused, is this a diagnosis?? can GPs even diagnose depression?
i'm just finding the motivation to study so hard, i'm also homeschooled so it's kinda easy to get lazy. i just feel so hopeless and useless and extremelyyyy uninterested in literally everything. i know it takes time but teh sertraline hasn't impacted me at all.
I feel like it isn't enough, I was referred to NHS talking therapies too but now they're telling me that I'd be better off doing counselling than CBT, the wait list for counselling is over a year...lol

Hello,

I hope you are doing ok, i can understand exactly what you are going through as I am going through exactly the same thing right now. Firstly, if you have been given sertraline after seeing the doctor I would say it is safe to assume you have been diagnosed with depression.

You have also listed all the main symptoms of depression and although you may not feel they are depression hopefully with the medication they will start getting better. Therapy is also important but you need to find the right kind for you.

As for the sertraline, how have the side effects been? For me personally I have now been on it for about three weeks and although I did feel slightly better and feel like I'm now not as good again. Sertraline can take 4 to 6 weeks to start having an effect but if you are not feeling any benefits by the fourth week then do consider seeing your doctor as you may benefit from a stronger dose.

I hope this helps, if you have any questions or just generally want to talk about this further please feel free to ask. Our private messages are also open.
