Hi there!

My name is Kiera. I'm a third-year Psychology student at York St. John University. I suggest looking at Religion, Philosophy, and Ethics. One of my friends takes the course and really loves it, she has similar interests to you!

I've copy-pasted this from the course page (link here):

"Religion, Philosophy and Ethics have always been closely related, and on this course you will explore the interactions between them. You will consider the questions raised in both historical and contemporary contexts, and with reference to key philosophical and religious texts. However, we also encourage you to look beyond the established tradition and consider questions that may not appear in textbooks.
Throughout this course, we investigate important and relevant topics such as:

Morality

Evil and suffering

How we deal with death

Religion and feminism

The environmental crisis

Delving into issues like these not only shows future employers that you are not afraid to take on complex problems, it will also change how you see the world. You will also explore the questions raised by religion and philosophy from the perspective of other academic subjects, such as literature, art, politics and film. "

There's much more information on the website, including the modules you'd study and entry requirements, but this gives you a little idea of what you'd cover! The course at YSJ has field trips, community links and placement opportunities too🤗. Hopefully, this helps, if you have any questions let me know!

Hi there!

I’m a final-year International Relations and Arabic student, and I can confirm that IR does touch on many of the topics you’re interested in. However, I’d say Anthropology and Global Development have a stronger focus on culture, people, and societies compared to IR.

Global Development is an interdisciplinary field that explores how societies change, what constitutes progress, and the interventions aimed at driving change. It combines elements of IR, Anthropology, History, and Economics. You can check out the modules offered here: SOAS Global Development.
For a hands-on introduction, you can also attend SOAS’s Global Development Masterclass, which includes a lecture and interactive activity on labour migration from a class-relational perspective. Sign up here: Global Development Masterclass.

Another unique option is the World Philosophies degree, which delves into diverse philosophical traditions from Western, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern cultures. Modules like ‘Philosophies of the Margins: Thinking Across Borders’, ‘Comparative Ethics’, ‘Jewish Identity from Ancient to Modern Times’, and ‘Death and the Meaning of Life’ might align with your interests. Learn more here: SOAS World Philosophies.

A History degree could also be a great fit! I’m currently taking an open module called ‘Islam in China’, which explores the origins and development of Islam in China, from Tang China’s ‘Silk & Sea Routes’ to the Mongol empire; the cultural adaptation of Islam in late imperial China (Ming and Qing), interactions with other religious communities, and the unique experiences of the Uyghur and Hui ethnicities.

You could also consider joint degrees, where you combine two subjects to tailor your studies even further.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi futuredrlawyer, 👋

It's great to hear you are considering a degree learning about different cultures, this sounds so interesting.

We have many courses at the University of Sheffield, in different departments, that might be of interest to you!

We have psychology and sociology degrees but also we are famous for our School of East Asian Studies where you can do a BA in Chinese studies, Japanese studies, Korean Studies, or East Asian studies more generally. Here is a link with more information on this school!

We also have the School of Languages and Cultures, with BAs on French, German, Catalan, Dutch, and many more! Here is the link.

The undergraduate degree I did at BA also is a great chance to learn about cultures and identities. The English Literature BA features modules such as 'History of English', 'Renaissance to Revolution', 'Representing the Holocaust', 'Road Journeys in American Culture:1930-2000', 'Contemporary Black British Writing', and many more. Here is the link to the webpage for this BA.

I can personally confirm that the teaching and resources for English Literature at the University of Sheffield are amazing. I did my BA and MA in English Literature here and I am now doing my PhD. You also have the option to select optional modules from other degree subjects such as psychology, history, and languages.

Do you have any other questions about subjects at UoS, or perhaps even student life in Sheffield more generally? 🙂

Best wishes,
Phoebe A
