Finance GEM/A101 + income from abroad

Hi,

I received a letter from SFE saying to let them know when I return to The UK after working abroad, but I'm only doing a temporary contract (9 months) in clinical research for a UK university. I declared it because the money comes from a subdivision of the university to my UK/only bank account. This is just because of how funding is delivered through the university - I am not a local employee. My contract states explicitly that it is temporary and that my permanent and normal address is in The UK. Will this affect my funding? I'm worried because I just got a place for Graduate Entry Medicine and of course hope to receive funding. I have always lived with my parents and can document fully my normal residence at this address (bank accounts, GP/NHS letters, etc. etc.).

Many thanks.

If this is for a September 2025 course then those applications aren't live yet. They won't be open till the spring. Once they are you'll then be able to reapply. You can sign up here to be notified when they are live: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/student-finance/get-ready-find-out-when-to-apply-for-student-finance. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

I was just wondering whether it might be easier to just pay the tuition fees myself? This is because I'm wondering whether SFE not indicating me as eligible for home status will impact my uni home status?. I will have only been away for 9 months -, this is defined in the contact with dates, listed as temporary, and lists my permanent address as in The UK, but reading threads on here and elsewhere is making me nervous.

Could the SFE decision impact my uni's home status decision?

Many thanks

Hi there,

The university are the ones that decide the Tuition Fee charge. We have no impact on this.

If you have been outside the UK on a temporary basis, then you can provide evidence of this to prove this i.e. temp contract, visa's, flight tickets etc. Applications for 25/26 are not yet open, but are you due to open later this month. You would apply and confirm your time outside the UK. The team will ask you for evidence to prove this . They will then review this and confirm if its been accepted not.

Thanks,
Claire
