Congratulations! You've submitted your UCAS application, and now you've been invited to submit a portfolio.
Your portfolio is an opportunity to show your passion for the subject alongside your skills and ability, so take this as your opportunity to show what you can do!
Firstly, don't panic if you feel like you don’t have lots of work to use. When you're submitting your portfolio, it will most likely be early in the year and you may not have lots of work - or so you think! You can use work in progress, work from previous projects and photos of your work to compile your portfolio together. When I was creating mine, I had lots of work from my Art and Design courses and less for fashion design specifically. However, lots of my previous artwork showed my drawing ability and interest in design, so these pieces were still great additions to my portfolio.
Also, if you haven't studied fashion previously, you may feel you don't have relevant work to use. But fashion design involves more than just clothing itself, so if you have sketches, life drawings, collages, print design work, textiles work, or any other creative work, it can all aid your portfolio.
I found the best way to start compiling my portfolio was to gather all my work together and laid everything out in front of me to see what I was working with. Then I started a process of elimination to pick out my best and most interesting work.
Make sure you are showcasing a variety of skills and work, which display your passion for the subject. This can include things like fashion sketches, life drawing, sewing and pattern work, textiles work, and much more. If you have complete projects with final outcomes, it can be good to include these to show your full working process from start to finish. Sketchbooks and experimentation work are also great to include as it shows how you think and how you like to work. And don’t forget to include some final pieces which you’re able to talk about.
Each course at BCU, including Fashion Design, has a breakdown of what to include in your portfolio on the BCU website. So be sure to check you're including everything you need to perfect your portfolio!
