Do I go to uni?

Just looking for some advice, I'm a year 12 sixth form student doing sociology, psychology, and English language and not sure what I want to do and wanted some personal opinions from other uni students or sixth form students in the same position as me. Thank you!

What bits of your current courses do you find interesting/enjoy?
Is there anything you particularly enjoy finding out about outside your studies (through podcasts, tv shows, youtube, getting lost on wikipedia etc)?
Do you have any hobbies you love?
Do you have any part time jobs? Anything within them that you particularly enjoy or loathe?

What are you considering doing if you choose not to go to university?

I enjoy sociology the most, then psychology, then English language.I enjoy certain aspects of history, netflix , walking, cooking. I do have a part time job and I hate the physical aspects but I enjoy sitting at the computer and writing up data/admin work. I guess I'd go into full time work but that's not really preferable.

Hi there! It’s great that you’re thinking about your options—choosing a degree can feel overwhelming, but there are plenty of ways to explore what might suit you.

I’d recommend attending university open days to get a feel for the teaching style, campus atmosphere, and facilities. Many universities also offer taster sessions during these events, where you can sit in on lectures, workshops, or seminars to experience what studying your chosen subject might be like. These sessions are a great way to see if the course content and teaching methods align with your interests. Additionally, open days often include opportunities to speak to current students and academics, giving you firsthand insights into their experiences.

Since you’re enjoying Sociology, Psychology, and English Language, you might want to explore related fields like Social Anthropology, which combines social science with cultural studies and touches on topics you’re already studying. At SOAS, for example, modules include ‘Mind, Culture and Psychiatry’ and ‘Social Theory, Reform and Revolution in an Age of Extremes’ and ‘Literatures of Love, Loss and Desire’. Recent graduates from SOAS’s Anthropology and Sociology department have gone on to work for organisations like the BBC, UNICEF, Deloitte, and the World Bank, as well as roles in media, international development, and social work. You can read more about the course here: SOAS Social Anthropology.

If you’re interested in gaining practical skills while studying, you could look into degree apprenticeships. These are great for job security, though from my understanding they tend to be more business or finance-focused rather than humanities-related. Your sixth form’s careers team should have more information, so it’s worth having a chat with them!

I hope this helps, and feel free to ask if you have more questions!
