What do you want to do with your career? There are a huge variety of legal careers spanning ultra-specialised (and highly competitive) corporate/commercial roles in the City, generalist commercial lawyers in all major cities through to "high street" conveyancing practitioners in just about every town in the land.

Where do you see yourself going? If you've always hankered after doing Leveraged Finance at Lathams (poor you) then, yes, you are likely to struggle. If, however, you see the attraction of focusing on a less commercial practice area, or basing yourself outside of the London rat-race, then there will still be opportunities for you.

There's little point in us advising on your prospects and potential next steps if we assume that you aiming for the Magic Circle, when actually you see yourself acting on farm finance in Carlisle (and, yes, that's a thing).

Hello,

Firstly and most importantly, I agree with the previous comment which mentions that you should do what YOU want to do. This is your life and you should do a job which you will enjoy as it will be more satisfying and you are more likely to do well.

Doing an LLM or the SQE with a 2:2 may be slightly more difficult in terms of getting onto these courses as usually the minimum grades are 2:1, however, many institutions will still consider applicants to can demonstrate exceptional achievement in other areas.

In terms of whether it is worth becoming a solicitor with a 2:2, I don't think this is the right question. If you want to be a solicitor, it should be because you want to help your clients, it should be because you enjoy working with the law and want to make a difference in the lives of people who will come to you. The grades you get should not determine whether it is worth taking on a certain job at all and I would argue that is the completely wrong way of thinking about it.

I hope this helps, if you have any further questions please do let me know.

I am thinking of getting into Real Estate Law and exploring options out of London aswell. I don’t see myself at a Magic Circle firm but I still want to become a solicitor and use my degree to make a career for myself.
