Withdrawing from A-levels

Hi
Currently I am resitting my all 3 of my a-levels (Biology, Chemistry and Geography) this year and my school has already entered me for these examinations. I achieved a B in geography the first time, and now that I have my uni offers all BBB (contextual offers), I want to withdraw from taking A-level Geography, as I don't really see the need to retake it and I could use the time to focus more on Biology and Chemistry.

If I do withdraw, do I have to contact my offer unis to let them know, or should I ask them beforehand if they would still accept me? Also what if my head of year/exam officer doesn't approve and doesn't want to withdraw me even though they can since its only February? Am I able to do it myself, and what is the withdrawal process like?
By the way, my exam board is Edexcel for all 3 subjects.
Any help would be great thanks !!

100% possible to withdraw but as in fees they might charge you or no refunds because they paid for the exam already but certainly it is as I tried this in many exam centres!!

I know for sure it is possible but say if they don't want to withdraw on my behalf? Do you know if there's another way about it?

There is no other way. no exam Board can withdraw if for u like AQA. U must get the exam officer in your school to withdraw they made the entry and they only can make any amendments.

From experience I really say this.

You should notify all your uni choices before your withdraw from any subjects.

In all likelihood they won't be concerned, but you must tell them of any changes to the info in your application.

Thank you!
Also am I better off to let them know that I am withdrawing, or is better to ask them if they are okay with it?

I would probably just say "I am considering withdrawing from XYZ which I included on my pending qualifications, could you let me know if this would impact the offer I have received".

Never ever can a candidate withdraw from an exam, only an exams officer can do that.

If you still don't get your way, you can skip the exam and not turn up on the day of the exam and get an X grade i.e. NO RESULT!!! 😀 lol

Also, you should contact your universities to tell them the decision not to retake A-Level Geography.

Honestly u know what they should of do. They should have just give us no result and nothing if we didn’t term up instead of giving us a U. Like why would they put it in record u might as well withdraw it.

It is up to the exams officer at your Sixth Form or College ultimately. I know some centres like Campbell Harris College in Kensington gets 2000 or so candidates each year and some friends have had their exam entry withdrawn and others got an X grade i.e. NO RESULT as they did not manage their revision effectively?!😧

Yes but my point being that exam officers should not give student a U for not turning up as it is a record and some unis may look at these grades or as resit if your doing it. They should withdraw the exam at when student did not attended but I think it’s because by the time they message it will be too late for the exam board to take heed.

I wonder if you get an X grade i.e. NO RESULT for not turning up...do UCAS send the grade to your respective UCAS choices? 😧

Yup A U grade . Honestly they would not care less they have the ULN but some may need further update as in proof can’t with U grades no certificate however there is a provisional results.

But what annoys me it students saying I can’t do this I won’t turn up or no i need more revision so I am not gonna go. Buddy withdraw from the exam you’re gonna get a U grade cuz u didn’t attend it.

There are so much problems with a U grade even if u resit it.

You get an X grade if you don't turn up, not a U. Only a U, if you write your name, candidate number and centre number on the paper. 🙂 I should know, as I asked my cousin. 😉 lol

I never encountered nor know what an X grade is . But I do stress that you ask your cousin and not a real examiner or professional in this.

Yes, look here: https://support.pearson.com/uk/s/article/Results-X-And-Grades#:~:text=X%20grades,all%20parts%20of%20the%20examination.
Yes, to confirm that unis receive X grades along with the rest of your results.

Am I able to do it myself, and what is the withdrawal process like?
By the way, my exam board is Edexcel for all 3 subjects.
Any help would be great thanks !!

Good Morning!

Before you withdraw, I would contact the uni's you have applied to and what your next steps are. Do not do anything yet, until you are certain you will still be accepted into university without your A-Level in Geography resit. Also, emailing your form tutor, head of year and exams officer will be useful as they can help you make a more informed decision. Good luck!

Kind regards, Jenifer (Kingston rep)

Hi, Its so funny to see this because I'm in the exact same situation however I'm not sitting Geography this year and last year didn't sit my Biology and Chemistry exams. My personal advice is to speak to your sixth form or college to see what they would advise you however if your offers (given you've received all decisions) don't require above your current Geography grade B then it should be okay, however its always important to inform your universities to avoid complications and extra stress. All the best this year!
