Oxford Degree: how to check if legitimate/person telling the truth

I work as a tutor and a man claimed he went to Oxford (Trinity College). He got very defensive when I asked. I want to check whether he's telling the truth (older person). Does not seem an Oxford graduate to me if he writes "sight" for "site". The Oxford Gazette is embargoed online because it contains personal data (ie names of graduates!). He's not in Linkedin, etc.

Oxford's verification process is here, but it's only applicable if you fall under one of the groups listed. Otherwise you don't have legitimate need to have access to that info.

As someone who went to Trinity College i'm invested to see if you found out if he was lying or not. I forget that people lie about this kind of stuff. Suppose you could ask him where he did his exams in first year. Exams are always held at the Exam School site in Oxford (no idea how old the guy is but odds are he hs to have done A exam there). Failing that, you could ask him if he wore the different colour roses for his exams and who gifted him them. Usually its the year above who gift the first years carnations to wear on their lapel for exams in the worder - white for first exam, pink for the rest and red for the last. There could be the case he was a loner and didn't do it, but he should at least be aware of the tradition. Finally you could ask him where abouts in Oxford did he do his matriculation and if he had to sign anything upon joining Oxford. New students always matriculate in the Sheldonian where they read you a load of latin and before that at Trinity, you have to sign your name, who you are the son of and where you hail from in a giant book.

I don't fall under any of these categories - I think that women have to cope with enough, especially if some men (of a certain age) feel they have to make up for their lack of education by lying (and even worse if one is more qualified than they are). There's no reason why a person who went to Oxford is less or more "safe" than others, but there might be ways of verifying this informally (eg MA granted by Oxford Univ after a certain period of time, etc). Going to a library with paper copies of the Gazette going back to 1980-1990 for example, and figuring out a possible graduation date. Alternatively, carrying a lie detector as part of adult tuition. An Oxford grad would be able to sniff out another one. We are talking a computer nerd, not Sebastian Flyte. I hope others have some cunning way to check. Also if he's a drop out (I doubt that in his time an ethnic student would have got in) he would have the same type of information as a graduate.

If they dropped out you could ask them about the graduation ceremony (they speak latin, you go in lines and bow left and right while wearing a commoners gown, you go to put on your graduation gown, go back in and do some more bows and utter a sentence in a latin i forget which). The alternative is what benefits do they get as an alumni (free entry into all colleges with your myoxford card, also free access to JSTOR for scientific journals).

I'm still not clear why you need to verify it, but just assume he's lying and proceed accordingly.

i forget the exact time frame as i havent done it het but there is also something along the lines of being able to book two seats at the high table either once a term or once a year in the trinity halls for a meal/formal.

So yeah asking them
- what the name of the card is they receive when they graduate
- what alumni benefits they get
- about the grad ceremony itself

I will add that unless theyve seen a friend with one, they shouldnt know about the myxoford card unless they have one as i almost missed getting mine towards the end of my degree given it was an email about it

Final final comment - they also don't give you your degree DURING the ceremony, we got ours afterwards at the college at Trinity as for the whole day you go and have a breakfast there, do the ceremony, and have afternoon tea at the college after where we were given our diplomas as certificates (NOT A SCROLL)

Thank god people like you exist in this forum. We shall keep digging. The address he says he lives at is also suspect - I don't want to end up underneath the floorboards.

I reckon he's tool old for any new fangled cards. He could be the right-hand man of a boss, and he's impersonating and stealing data from him. "The not so talented Mr Ripley"
