A levels

I’m currently studying a level History, Geography, biology and core maths AS however I’m finding it hard to balance my time. As biology is my weakest subject, I’m thinking of doing AS biology instead for the rest of the year and when I have completed my exam taking up AS ancient history in the following year. With the grades I would be predicted for this I would receive 144 UCAS points however would only doing 2 full A levels make it impossible to find a university,
Thanks

By biology being weak, what sort of grades are you getting at the moment?

Hi @Odneil08,

Most universities typically require at least three full A-levels, so only having two full A-levels alongside two AS levels might limit your options.
However, some universities do accept UCAS points rather than strict A-level requirements, especially for certain courses. I’d recommend checking the entry requirements of the universities and courses you’re interested in to see if they specify three full A-levels or if they accept equivalent UCAS points.

If you’re struggling with Biology, switching to AS and picking up AS Ancient History later could help you manage your workload better. But if you’re aiming for competitive universities or specific courses that require three full A-levels, it might be worth considering whether you can push through with a third full A-level or find a subject that you find more manageable.

Would you be open to exploring other subject combinations or seeing if a university foundation year could be an option if needed? Do you perhaps have a specific course in uni that you're leaning towards?

Currently working at a c but haven’t done my mock exams yet, predicted A’S in all others except core maths at a B so biology is quite off the mark

I’m open to pretty much everything at the minute and I’m not fully leaning towards one particular course. I understand that As biology will eliminate most if not all science based courses as geography is more of a humanitarian science. Also I’m looking doing 2 full a levels and 3 AS as opposed to 2 but I’ll defenitely reconsider if it may put my applications in doubt, thanks for your reply

It’s mainly however that when I look at the specification for second year biology, I struggle to see myself being able to manage it as our school takes AS maths in the second year aswell

Universities will see an A-level in biology more favourably than an AS in maths.

What seems so unmanageable about second year biology?

Just looking at the topics from the textbook and specification from reading ahead, I think I would manage it if my AS maths exam was in the first year but as it is in second I think it will draw time away from my biology

You haven't started covering the content yet so it is going to feel overwhelming. Do you have to do AS maths or are you being made to do it? I think it is way too early to make such a massive decision that will put you at a disadvantage.

We had to do an AS subject, I wanted to do ancient history but they only do that second year so I chose core maths. I am already struggling with biology and just think that doing AS instead and allowing myself to do the ancient history that I wanted to do next year would be better, saying that tho I understand that only 2 full a levels is bad regardless of the 3 AS levels. The reason I asked was because I wondered if 144 UCAS points would save my subject choices but if not then your right, maybe I should rethink

What do you want to study at university?

Not sure if I’m being honest, if you could recommend any courses that somewhat align with my subjects that would be great, I was considering natural sciences however my choices will most likely eliminate this as a choice
