Do I have a chance of getting into dentistry?

I’m in Year 12 doing bio Chem maths and I’m on track to getting 3As however my GCSEs were not the best.
I have 4 7s (Maths, combined science and English language)
2 6s (Imedia, geography)
And 3 5s (engineering, photography and English lit)
Do I have a reasonable chance of getting in to a dental school if I get good ucats and a good personal statement or should I switch to trying to get into medicine as it’s still early in the year?

yes, you have a chance of getting into dental school; medical school is not easier to get into LOL.

Dental schools you should probably apply to, given you get a good ucat:

bristol

Plymouth

Newcastle

QMUL

You could also apply to Dundee and Leeds, but I'm not sure exactly how their admissions policy works.

So yeah, you can apply to like half of the dental schools and then probably have a shot at getting in, it just depends on how good your ucat score is.

Medicine is harder to get into so don’t switch.
Look at uni websites to see if they look at GCSEs or not because everywhere assesses applications differently.

People are saying medicine is harder to get into but I don’t think that’s true, the application process is basically the same and there’s only about 13 dental schools in the UK whilst there’s around 44 medical schools, so generally dental school is more competitive

But just to note this isn’t me saying medicine is easier to get into, just has more spaces for ppl. I was in the same dilemma as you last year and decided to pick a degree I acc want to do rather than doing whichever is ‘easier’ to get into

Why do people bring up this “there are more medical schools”? Yeah? There are more applicants to medicine.

I also didn’t say it was easier, I said they are about the same.

I didn’t say you said it’s easier, and per year the application to place ratio for dentistry is generally higher than medical schools so your argument doesn’t work. Ofc this is me not considering other factors like university popularity, interview styles etc but just a basic overview. Please reread my original post, I didn’t even mention you 😭🙏

I wasn’t trying to start an argument and my post wasn’t even aimed at yours, I was just trying to help Op

People say medicines easier because you can get a mid ucat ~2500 and still apply strategically and get into med. dent uni ucat cut offs are higher even for contextual ie nc was 2750, man: 2800, Bristol 3k+

all of this is true.

I guess it just depends on which university you want to go to and what your stats (gcses + ucat) are.

But Bristol's UCAT threshold for medicine is still higher than for dentistry. I'm comparing it at a university level (generally) rather than as a whole (i was basically just comparing chances at top unis).

Also, you have to take into consideration that many medicine applicants put dentistry as a 5th choice.

I did, also, yet again, say there were of a similar difficulty. But, yes, it does come down to what your stats are and which uni you want to go to.

Less competitive = easier. No?

Fully aware you didn't mention me, well not directly; you said "People are saying medicine..." implying what other people have said on this post 😭; so you're sort of wrong.

Yeah, I gave them the unis they can apply to and just said that it's not necessarily true that it's easier to get into medicine. Is that not more helpful rather than just whining about which is more competitive? I mean you should obviously apply to what you want to do rather than what is 'easier', anyway.

Jeez I swear my post wasn’t aimed at yours, if anythign it was aimed at posts like j_O (even then it wasn’t specifically aimed at them)

And I’m not wining about which is more competitive I just told you about the ratio because you asked why do people always mention there’s less dental schools 🤷*♀️

You really need to get rid of your victim complex, my post was NOT targeted towards you directly or indirectly, I’m sorry if it made you feel offended but that was never the intention of my post.
Also I still can’t quite see how my post is saying you specifically said dentistry is less competitive / easier in any form of way

dentistry has fewer places, fewer unis, higher UCAT cutoffs, meaning interviews are more competitive. Dentistry is more difficult to get into than medicine end of.

As for the post, make a list of all the dental schools, you’ll find a list on the GDC site, then go through and check for contextualities which can help, then see if you hit all the GCSE criteria, then with that list you know where you can and can’t apply, then just work on a levels and UCAT

None of you lot have suggested any unis this person can apply to.

Why don't all of you try to be helpful?

Also, how was this argument? I just brought up the fact that saying there are more medical schools is completely useless info. The are five schools that offer Anglo-Saxon studies, does that mean it's harder to get into than dentistry?

ffs I was the only one that was helpful, stop going on at me.
