Student Finance for Second Undergraduate Degree

Hello all,

I am a paramedic by background, currently completing an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice at King's College London, I would like to study Medicine in September 2026, - I do have a BSc 1st Class and predicted Merit/ Distinction at MSc studies.

I am looking at a couple of GEP courses however with my qualification and area where I wish to study - the prospects are looking poor. So I am looking to apply for a mixture of GEP and undergraduate. What is the funding like for a second undergraduate degree, I understand GEP is funded and because it will be my second degree I am not entitled to tuition fee loan. Please let me know what funding is available?

Hi Billy,

Normally we wouldn't fund second degrees, unless the course is one of our exception courses. If you confirm the course name, length, start date and university you wish to study, we can check this on the system to see if its one of our exception courses.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire

Thanks for getting back to me,

The course will be- Kent and Medway Medical School Medicine A100 5 years September 2026
St George’s University Medicine A100 5 years September 2026
Or any other undergraduate medicine degree.
If I didn’t get funding would there still be the possibility of getting maintenance loan?

Hi there, would this be a Graduate Entry medicine course? Thanks, Jason

Hello Jason - I will be applying for a mixture of two graduate and two undergraduate courses, I understand there is funding for graduate course, but undergraduate there is no funding (unless this has changed) - the question is whether I would get maintenance loan?

Hi Billy, 5 year courses with graduate entry medicine in the title are not graduate entry courses. These would be processed in the same way as undergraduate medicine courses. There would be zero entitlement available, but may be eligible for Grants for Dependents and Disabled Student Allowance awards. Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen, yes I understand they’re not graduate courses- my question is for undergraduate course in medicine. Would I still be entitled to maintenance loan?

if I have already completed an undergraduate degree previously in a different subject area.

Hi Billy, students who hold a an honours degree or higher can apply for Undergraduate Medicine, but are eligible for Maintenance loan only for year 1-4, but will only be eligible for a Reduced Rate Maintenance Loan for any subsequent years. Thanks, Stephen

Great thank you. Do you know where I can find the reduced rates amount or would it be case by case dependent?

For further context, I would be living away from home and I already have a postgraduate degree funded through SFE.

Hi again, the living location would be assessed as part of the application itself. As medicine is classed as an exemption course, we do not take in to consideration the Postgraduate study. Thanks Stephen.

Would you be able to signpost me to the rates for the maintenance loan which are reduced? Or are they case by case basis dependent?

Hi Billy, these would be case by case, as each year these figures change with the cost of living. Thanks, Stephen
