Really depends on you. Do you prefer tying or writing things? Are you going to need to run specialised apps? Do you think you'll need a bigger screen?

If you bought a fully working used premium business laptop for under £250, would that leave enough money for you to buy a tablet too?

It's fine if you have both an ipad tablet and a laptop.

Use the tablet for scribbling notes on the lecture hand-outs during lectures.
Use the laptop for typing assignments, email, spreadsheets etc.

I mean this is a bit more expensive than what others have said but you can try getting a 2 in 1 laptop. It's the best of both worlds and the cheapest ones could be around £400. I would imagine that it is cheaper than getting a laptop and an ipad

It really depends on your personal style. An iPad is better for handwritten notes, while a laptop is better for typing. That being said, between the two, I would always go for a laptop—especially for a degree like Psychology. You're going to be typing up lots of essays, and having a stronger device with a laptop allows smooth access to all your lecture notes, PowerPoints, and research software.

There’s also the 2-in-1 option, where you get the flexibility of both a touchscreen and a keyboard, which could be the best of both worlds!

There's an interesting debate / user comments on tablets vs 2 in 1's for note taking here:

A good attitude when deciding what to buy is that your IT equipment should be a slave to you. Look at paying the minimum in order to get a great tool for each particular need.
