I'm almost certainly going to firm Swansea, but before I do, does anyone know:

1.

Where do most students tend to live? I want to bring my dog so will be looking for accomodation that allows such . Don't mind being a bit far out if need be.

2.

Can we claim a student bus pass/rail card?

3.

What kind of jobs are available locally? I will most likely need to work part-time as I'll be living away from my husband who will be taking care of the house etc. with only one income now - so I'll need to support myself separately (if that makes sense).

I'll look into these questions too when I have some time over the weekend - just posting now in case anyone already knows!

Excited for us!

I'm currently studying my undergrad at Swansea so should hopefully be able to answer questions anyone has! Students typically tend to house share in either Brynmill or Uplands - prices are quite good generally if you're sharing, but go up a bit more obviously if you get a 1-2 bed. On campus accommodation is available for first year students I believe but I don't know of many GEM students that do this, as while convenient it's not as nice as a house and is usually more expensive. 1/2 bed flats tend to be found more in the marina but this is a lot further from campus (still under 2 miles and has good bus access) - Brynmill/Uplands are all within a mile from uni!
In terms of travel, you can get a student travel pass which gives you discounted rates and there's also a free shuttle bus to bay campus (not our campus sadly!) but it has good library facilities among other things. A lot of things in the area are very walkable though
There are mainly coffee shop/waitress or retail jobs in the area for students but be sure to get in there quick! They also hire within the uni sometimes to run events/JCs (campus pub) which I've heard is really good pay.
hope this helps

Im definitely going to firm Swansea too! Have a question for those coming from Swansea undergrad - I’m hoping to save some money working during the summer/winter breaks - does anyone know how much time GEM students get off each year? I can’t find this online and it’d be helpful to know so I can plan!

I haven't actually seen how much time off we have either. It might vary year by year as some years are a bit more intense than others? My guess would be 40-45 weeks studying. Would be a good question to ask a current med student. Sorry I can't be anymore help

I am doing a clinical based degree at Swansea atm and I believe GEM has a similar structure - 2 weeks off for christmas, 1 week off for easter and then approximately 6-7ish weeks for summer. defo not 100% sure but I think this near enough what to expect!

Hi Ellie,

Could I ask a couple more questions, please?

1.

How much time do we get off a year, and when is this typically?

2.

What opportunities are there to get involved in research? I have a clinical research background so eager to carry on in some capacity, if possible.

3.

Are there any opportunities to learn French? I will be signing up to learn Welsh (very excited about this!). Language lover and husband is a linguist

Thank you so much!

Hi, I have an offer from Swansea but Notts was my first choice coming into the process. How are people going about making decisions when the courses overall seem quite similar?!

although i'm probably biased as a current Swansea student, as someone who also applied to Notts and it was definitely up there as my top choice, a few reasons I have decided to firm Swansea instead are:
- proximity to beach/coastal area was something really important to me in order to unwind. I often go for walks on the beach as a study break, leaving my stuff in the library (it's that close!)
- swanseas GEM course was rated number 1 in the UK for preparing med students for F1/F2 years, in final year you have a placement specifically for shadowing a junior doctor to understand their role completely, this is something i think is really helpful and I believe is unique to Swansea.
- from my interview with GEM i felt a great sense of community on the course from the student ambassadors and just seemed like a really supportive learning environment (can't really comment on this from Notts tbf as I did my interview online)
- I am told the MedSoc is quite good at swansea
- swanseas course is quite unique in the way it does 'topic of the week' where each week is structured very similarly you just focus on a different topic/illness. for example one week would be coronary artery disease, the next asthma. and then in each week consultants from that specialty come in, you present a case on fridays etc. i think it's really great to be able to focus a lot on one thing at a time, and also because you're not just learning one system at a time it's good to go over things repeatedly.
- lastly, cheaper rent 🤣

Hi!

Of course, happy to help.
1. I think we can probably expect about 8-9 weeks off per year. Christmas is 2 weeks off usually, the week of christmas and the week of new years. Easter is 1 week off and then summer tends to be anywhere from 5-7 weeks off. Definitely the whole month of August but just depends when we break up in July and when we start back in September.
2. Swansea are rated really highly for their research, and do a lot of it specifically in the medical field. I'm not too sure about specific opportunities but I know that you'd most likely be able to get involved somehow. I have been keeping up with some paediatric cardiology research they are doing at the moment in partnership with Mongolia which has been so cool!! Definitely ask about it more once you are here, it'll likely be in the ILS (institute of life science) building where most medical research projects go ahead.
3. I'm not sure if they have any specific courses, but they do have a French Society which aid people in learning the language or can help you get opportunities to learn it elsewhere. There are definitely loads of opportunities to learn Welsh though as you said!!

Hope this helps
