Accommodation

I have put Southampton as my firm and I would like some advice on what accommodation is the best as in price and easily being able to meet new people (the popular ones) and if anyone else is considering Southampton? 😊

Hi,

It's wonderful that you want to come to Southampton University. Most current or past students will be biased in their opinions about which accommodation site is the best (I know I am). I would reconmend looking at our list of sites and comparing them. You can find details on what the price range is, what common facilaties there are and the type of rooms that are available at that site. If you are wanting to meet alot of new people, you may want to focus on our larger halls sites such as Wessex Lane, Glen Eyre and Mayflower Halls. It is also improtant to consider location. While you do get a bus pass included in the cost of your room, students often prefer to be in a site that is closer to the campus they are going to spend mpst of their time.

Hope this helps

Sounds good! Southampton is a good university and sits at the top of many international rankings. Accommodation prices in Southampton range from £85 - £725 per week, and it is recommended to stay close to campus or the city centre to make new friends as your budget allows.

Hi, my first choice atm would also be Southampton. As for accommodations, the two I’m between is Wessex Lane and Glen Eyre. I just can’t decide yet . My budget is around 180-220 but I also want an en-suite so it might be higher than some. 😅 The main things I look out for in accommodations would be the distance to the uni, facilities and the area around it. For example, the closest store, fast food place etc. I hope this helps

Both Glen and Wessex are quite similar in terms of accommodations. They're both large. Glen is closer to uni (walking distance). Wessex is closer to Wide Lane (sports). Glen has worse bus links than Wessex, but not by much. They're both very similar though!

Hello,

I’ve seen another ambassador has already messaged but I thought it’d be useful to let you know about my experience at Wessex Lane Walls. As already said by Matthew most people are biased in their opinions, and I definitely am since I think Wessex lane is probably the best halls.

Wessex Lane has a range of different accommodation and I stayed in enhanced plus shared bathrooms. Now I know shared bathrooms doesn’t sound enticing to everyone, but in the accommodation I was in, there was 4 bathrooms shared between 9, so I just shared with one other flatmate.

The room itself is perfect with a double bed, shelving, large window, desk and wardrobe space. No part of my flat had carpet so it just meant it was a lot cleaner and easier to clean. But even so we had a weekly cleaner that would come in and clean our shared bathrooms and hallway floors.
The kitchen was very large and had room for a tv, 2 sofas, dining table and 6 chairs. Even with that we had two stoves and two ovens, and plenty of cupboard space.

Wessex Lane is about a 10 minute bus ride to campus and the bus stop is right outside of the halls. If not it’s about a 20 minute walk to campus. All University accommodations come with a free bus pass for the year. So even if you went for Glen Eyre cause of the close walking distance, it’s basically the same time for a free bus ride from Wessex.

Wessex Lane is a really popular site and everyone I know has enjoyed staying there. The only down-side to Wessex lane is that it’s a bit more out of the centre and takes longer to travel into the town centre than other accommodation - maybe about 30 min bus ride.
But saying all of this, the other student accommodations I’ve visited are still amazing choices, so it does make it very hard.

I hope this has helped! Let me know if you have any questions about Wessex Lane.

I'm so glad you're going to study at the University of Southampton. If you're looking for cheap Southampton student accommodation, Green Wood Court is a great option at only £114 per week, offering studio and non-ensuite rooms and a 17-minute walk to the University of Southampton.

Just stumbled across this messsge and it’s been really helpful. Can I ask what u did on nights out in the city centre, was it costly getting back to halls? Are there good pubs in and around Wessex Lane?

I'll be honest since Wessex is a little bit out of the way, it meant buses took around 30-40 to get into town where the nightclubs are. But the main places to go in Southampton are Trilogy, Jesters, District (also previosuly known as Switch), Sobar, and there's a few others. Getting to Sobar and Jesters is relatively easy to get to from Wessex since they're closer and out of the town centre (but still very popular spots). District, Trilogy and surrounding bars are in town and getting an uber home cost around £10 to £12 at midnight and in the am (would be cheaper leaving earlier) - which I thought was amazing since sharing that with three other people meant it only cost me around £3.
A lot of these clubs have student nights such as Trilogy's Glam Thursdays which has a lot of giveaways, and Sobar Tuesdays which has £1 doubles and £2 quad-vods.
There isn't many pubs around Wessex, but the main pubs and bars to go to anyways are in Portswood. A lot of society's will do pub/bar crawls down Portswood before heading to a club. Portswood is around a 15/10 min bus journey from Wessex I would say. The closest good pub would probably be the Mitre, and they do a lush Sunday Roast.
