What are the Top Student Cities? 🌆✨

As we gear up for university life, we’re weighing various factors to help us make our final choices. One of them being the city itself. Together, we can delve into the details and provide valuable insights for future students 🎓

WHAT ARE THE TOP STUDENT CITIES? 🌆 AND WHAT MAKES THEM THE BEST?

I'm studying in Leicester, and I’d love to share my thoughts on how student-friendly I find it. Tell us about the city where you study! What makes it a great (or not-so-great) place for students? Share your experiences below! 👇😊

IS LEICESTER A CITY FOR STUDENTS? 💭 Leicester ticks many boxes when it comes to being a student-friendly place. Here’s what I’ve noticed during my three years there.

Well-situated and walkable 🚶*♂️
What I adore most about Leicester is its incredibly convenient location. With well-developed train and bus stations, it offers seamless connections to other major cities and key airports. Whenever I miss home or feel the urge to explore a new destination, the ease of travel and affordable options make it a breeze. As an international student who often travels back home, I’m especially grateful for this convenience ✈️

On a different note, I used to endure a one-and-a-half-hour commute to high school, which I absolutely despised. Living in a medium-sized city like Leicester, where the university campus, student accommodations, and city center are all within close proximity, has been a game-changer. I love having everything I need just a short walk away. No need for public transport, as everything is within a 10–15-minute walk, making life so much easier and more enjoyable 🥳

Abundance of student accommodations 🏠
Another pleasant surprise for me was the sheer number of student accommodations available in Leicester. Most of them are conveniently located right next to the campus and city centre. Within this vast array of options, there’s something to suit every budget and preference. Whether you’re looking for studio apartments, shared flats with ensuite options, or private housing, Leicester has it all. With prices starting as low as £80-£90 per week, I’ve never had trouble finding a cosy, affordable place to stay 💸

Affordable 💰
Speaking of affordability, Leicester’s cost of living is another major perk. Beyond budget-friendly accommodations, other expenses such as dining out, socialising with friends, and enjoying leisure activities are all very reasonable. You can indulge in these experiences without worrying about overspending. Even public transport has become more affordable, though, as I mentioned earlier, you might not need it since everything is within walking distance 🚍

Student Job Opportunities 💼
Many of us need to work at least part-time, and I remember feeling quite stressed about finding a job when I first arrived. Fortunately, it only took a few days and handing out a few CVs before I got a call offering me a job. It was a basic position in the hospitality industry, but when you’re in your first year and need money, any role is valuable 💪

Leicester is full of job agencies, restaurants, and coffee shops, so if your student budget needs a boost, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to support it 🧑*💻

Beyond these immediate options, there are also more developmental opportunities if you're not in a rush. De Montfort University (DMU) offers a recruiting agency called Unitemps, which specialises in advertising various roles for students. Through Unitemps, I became a student ambassador and worked as a receptionist and office admin at the university 👩*💼

My personal favorite, however, is the internship schemes. DMU offers Frontrunner Internships annually, which run for six months alongside your studies. These part-time positions are paid and provide professional experience. I was fortunate to be a research assistant in psychology in my second year through one of these.
Additionally, DMU advertises summer internships each year, which are part-time and last around ten weeks. For soon-to-be graduates, there’s the Graduate Champions programme, which lasts six weeks and often leads to permanent employment

Vibrant nightlife 🎉
While I’m not the biggest fan of clubbing (don’t worry, there are plenty of great clubs around), I find pubs much more enjoyable. Whatever your evening preferences, Leicester has something for everyone. You can opt for a night study session at the library or have fun with friends in one of the many clubs and pubs. One of the best things about the bars here is the generous student discounts. If you have specific tastes, Leicester has you covered even with a jazz bar! 🎷

One of the most popular and iconic student spots is Soar Point, located right on the DMU campus. During the day, it’s a fantastic place for lunch or snacks, but the real buzz starts in the evening. With daily student deals, bingo nights, quizzes, and more, there’s always something happening. The bar also features consoles and pool tables for added fun. On warm evenings, the terrace overlooking the Soar River is the perfect spot to unwind. It’s definitely one of my favorite places 🎭

Plenty of events 🎟️
I’ll admit, I’m not the best at staying up to date with events, but thankfully, I receive newsletters from the university that keep me informed about what’s happening both on campus and around the city. I’m continually amazed by the sheer number of events in a city that isn’t overwhelmingly large. From bonfire nights, Christmas markets, and festivals to comic cons and immersive exhibitions. There’s always something exciting in the newsletter. It’s great to have these creative options to unwind from studying 🎪

For sports enthusiasts, there’s plenty to enjoy too. Even as someone who isn’t particularly interested in football, I’m aware of Leicester City’s global recognition, and its stadium is a source of pride for the city. If you’re a football fan, visiting the stadium or attending a match is a must-do experience

Great food spots 🍝
As a self-proclaimed foodie, I’m always on the lookout for delicious eats. If you’re craving more recommendations, feel free to leave a comment!

My picky palate has been more than satisfied with the diverse range of cuisines available in Leicester, many of which offer student discounts. When I’m on a tight budget, I turn to Too Good To Go, which is well-established in Leicester and offers fantastic deals on surplus food from local eateries 🍴

Of course, I can’t resist leaving you with a recommendation to raise your appetite. If you love authentic Italian cuisine, you have to try Maurizio's Italian Pizza & Pasta. They serve the best pizza and pasta in Leicester, and honestly, it’s as good as anything I’ve had in Naples. With Maurizio being Italian, it’s no surprise that the food is made from top-quality ingredients and simply melts in your mouth 🍕

Entertainment and leisure time 🎮
No matter what your interests are or if you’re looking to discover a new hobby, Leicester offers plenty of opportunities. The city is brimming with vibrant, innovative spots like pilates and yoga studios, music and singing schools, and escape rooms 🧘*♂️🕹️

For those who prefer a more traditional experience, there are cinemas and Lane 7, a fantastic venue that combines a bar, restaurant, and a variety of games. You can enjoy arcade games, bowling, pool, ping-pong, mini golf, shuffleboard, and karaoke, all under the glow of neon lights and unique décor that feels straight out of an American movie 🎳

Another excellent spot is the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre on the DMU campus. With incredibly affordable membership rates for students, it’s open seven days a week and offers a wide range of facilities. These include a swimming pool, climbing wall, sports halls, fitness classes, a gym with personal training options, and a dance studio 🏊*♂️

For those who cherish peace and tranquility, Abbey Park is a must-visit. With its vast green spaces and picturesque riverside views, it’s perfect for a relaxing picnic with friends or engaging in more active pursuits like using the sports facilities or renting a kayak or pedal boat. The park’s pet corner, filled with small, domesticated animals, adds an extra charm 🌳

I come from a big city where everything feels distant and spread out. In Leicester, I’ve found more than I expected with affordability and accessibility. That’s why, in my opinion, LEICESTER IS A CITY FOR STUDENTS. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s a city where you can craft a truly multidimensional university experience. What do you think? 🤔

I hope it will be helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

I would personally say that the top 5 places for student life (in no particular order) are the following:
1. London
2. Sheffield
3. Manchester
4. Nottingham
5. Leeds
6. Maybe add Liverpool

At least those are the places are commonly hear others say when it comes to places that have good student life. This is me answering the title’s question.

Hi there!

Thanks for starting this, really helpful! Has anyone thought about Bath? This is my number one reason:

Bath is currently ranked as the UK's second safest city. The crime rates are low, the community is friendly and I found that very reassuring!

Also...

Bath also has some great nightclubs and pubs. Komedia, Labrynth, the Second Bridge and Moles (as well as a Spoons) all do great student night in the week and are a lot of fun to go to nights out with flatmates. And if you end up exhausting them all, then Bristol's only a half-hour, £3 bus ride away.

Bath is the perfect size. Small enough such that everything (shopping, train and bus station, coffee houses, green parks, museums) are within walking distance of each other but big enough to have plenty in it to do without getting bored. Its cosy, quaint and has a lovely, Georgian character.

Bath is diverse. People from all over the world visit Bath - the uni is around 33% international and the town is also a place where all different cultures are very welcome and celebrated.

Bath has plenty of supermarkets. Sounds a bit daft, but we also have plenty of choice of supermarkets to get your groceries in: Lidls and Sainsburys very close to the city centre and a Waitrose and two small Tescos directly in it. Theres also an Asdas from which people often get deliveries up to campus from if you wanted to save a bit more money.

Things to beware of or potential negatives to consider...

Bath's cost of living is on the high side although there is plenty of student accommodation available. Bath uni is also on a big hill and so walking to it from the city is difficult in bad weather and most people get the bus. Bath also has a distinct lack of parking options in the city centre, although this can be said of most cities! Some people from larger cities may also find Bath a little too small for their preferences!

I hope this helps - looking forward to hearing more suggestions!

My top three are Sheffield, Coventry, and Leicester. They are affordable, either from learning or life, and rent is also reasonable. And selections are broad and pretty.

Hi Carly Liu, 👋

Thanks for shouting out Sheffield! 😀

I can confirm as someone who has studied in Sheffield at undergraduate, master's and now PhD, it is definitely a great city to live and study in. 🏬

Both Sheffield as a city and accommodation at the University of Sheffield are great. There are lots of options for university student accommodation and in my experience, it has always been very affordable. 🏡

Also the student accommodation at Endcliffe, Ranmoor and in the city are all in great locations with local amenities, like shops, cafes and green spaces, within walking distance. I stayed in Endcliffe for the duration of my undergraduate and I loved the area. My flat was a 30 seconds walk from the beautiful Botanical Gardens (one of my favourite places in Sheffield!) 🌳🪴🌷

Here is the link to the accommodation web page. 😄

We also offer exclusive perks if you decide to return to student accommodation in your second and third year, such as rent freezes and a reward worth up to £250 which can be spent on food and drink, a fitness membership, or as cashback! 💸

Student life in general is amazing in Sheffield. There are over 300 societies and over 50 sports clubs you can get involved with and the Sheffield SU club nights are always a big hit (my personal favourite was Pop Tarts, which played classic pop anthems!) 🎶

We also have an amazing highlight in Sheffield, which is that we are situated so close to the Peak Distict. There are various buses and trains that will take you in the peaks for a day of amazing sights. My personal favourites are Ladybower Reservoir and Bamford Edge! 🌄

If anyone has any questions about studying in Sheffield and the student life here, please reply to this thread and I will do my best to help. Alternatively you can chat to myself (or other current students) via this webpage here. 😁

All the best,
Phoebe A 👋

Hiya!

It’s great to hear that Leicester is in your top three! Is there anything specific that draws you to Leicester—maybe the shops, entertainment, or restaurants?

Personally, I love visiting Roxy and Treetop Golf for a fun night out—I also really enjoyed Sixes! Sometimes, I even manage to catch a performance at the Curve Theatre recently, I watched Kinky Boots, Pretty Woman, and Ghost. When it comes to food, Kai, and Pai are some of my go-to spots, and Tamatanga and the Globe is still on my list - I haven’t managed to visit yet!

Leicester also has some amazing events throughout the year, I'm really looking forward to Light Up Leicester in a few weeks. One of my favourite past events was the Halloween Monsters around the city - Halloween is my favourite holiday and it was cool to even have one on Campus

What about yourself?

For me, it’s Coventry. It’s hard to explain why, but I just love it whenever I look at photos of the city. I’m actually thinking about going there someday. Right now, I’ve got a lot of studying to do, so I’m considering reaching out to Liahelp https://liahelp.com for assistance with my essay. That place gives me a sense of peace, yet at the same time, it fills me with energy.

I always find these posts from the Leic-located reps interesting because while it's all certainly true - I am a DMU alumni, it is well located, it is very walkable, it is affordable, it does have great places to eat and shops etc. - my main recollection of Leicester as a city and, honestly, why I sometimes hesitate to recommend DMU despite my course being good quality, my lecturers knowledgeable, the facilities well-equipped - is it being deeply unsafe, feeling unsafe regularly while walking, even in the middle of the day.

Feeling unsafe in my own home, in the university buildings, in the city as a whole. None of which was unfounded, mind - i had forensics at the end of my street in second year - we had police knock on our student house's door, we had a person on drugs tail someone into a university building and have to evicted by security.... countless, countless stories of girls i knew being catcalled/followed, some of the first instances of needle spiking in the country were in Leic, i had a guy threaten me with a knife in the street, i had homeless people approach me while on campus and intimidate and follow me around, trying to get me to go to cashpoints, not leaving me alone. I lived with someone in first year who repeatedly brought her much older boyfriend into halls, which put me on edge all of the time even when in my own flat. Had people yell slurs at me in the street, harass and follow me and my friends.

When I read these posts and all mention of the general safety is the city is omitted it's like, well - you're not wrong about any of what you said but it feels like you're really missing some crucial details! (Sorry DMU Rep, I know you get paid... it's not your fault 😂)

Literally the unsafest place I have ever lived. And I have lived in other major cities! My experience in multiple other cities has been markedly better. And maybe other people's experiences differ, but hell, as a gender non-conforming person - I would struggle to voluntarily live there again. I've heard similar stories from other people who've lived there too... but I guess other people clearly feel differently!

I reckon my pick would be Liverpool, where I did my A-levels. I lived there for two years studying and I loved it as a city. I really felt like people cared about one another - that people would speak out if something happened. It is truly a beautiful city and somewhere i'd love to return to if I get the chance in my career. I have several friends that still live there and love when I can visit and wander down the Mersey, revisiting places I remember.... and that bracing wind. Nowhere quite like it.
Imo:
Nottingham, Southampton, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol, Sheffield, Cardiff
