Car insurance cost

I’ve just passed my driving test and have been looking at car insurance. I’ve looked at a lot of different quotes and the cheapest I’ve managed to see was 1800 for me as the policyholder, and my parents also on the policy with a black box.

I was wondering whether this is worth getting, as I’m not sure what the chances are I will get cheaper than this are? I just don’t want to get it in case I could have got cheaper, but at the same time to not stall for too long the prices go up again.

the only other thing that I can advise other than that (the black box and parents on the policy) is to maybe schedule the insurance to start maybe 2-3 weeks from now? not sure if you've tried that already but it worked for me - happy driving!

What sort of mileage are you putting down? setting yourself a limit can help a good bit*. Does taking a bigger excess help? Sometimes that can open up quotes from other insurers who might be cheaper overall.

*Sometimes you'll just get asked for your estimated mileage, so you can get away with low balling it, but sometimes it will be a specific 'agreed' mileage, I've went a bit over this a few times and no one's every said anything, but maybe just luck/discretion.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I’ve tried that and it came down a bit.

Was just not sure if the price of £1,800 is worth going for or not, as I know some people with quotes around £1,000 but also some with up to £3,000.

I’ve heard looking too much can push quote prices up, but I’m not sure if I wait it out a bit they could drop further, or are more likely to go back up.

In your case how long were you looking for quotes before you settled on the one you went for? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.

I put down 2,000 miles a year as not really intending to use the car to go that far.

I’ve not looked at taking a bigger excess out, as I found that having an excess of £100 rather than £250 gave me cheaper quotes, but I will have a look at going for higher than £250 too.

in all honesty, I wasn't looking for that long - there was a website (I think it was Which?) that compared a load of insurance prices for the criteria that I put in, and I ended up going with the cheapest option, which worked out at around £1,400

ooh additionally - costs might depend on the kind of car you have and how old it is? I always forget that - mine is quite old and we got it quite cheaply, so the costs were always going to be lower to insure it, plus it doesn't have a very big engine

Yeah thanks. I’ve managed to work the quote down by about another £100 to £1,700 but as the engine is 1.9 litres, this is probably going to be the best price I get I reckon.

Have you already got a car? If not, you can look around for the prices of insuring different cars to see which works out cheaper for you.
Id also look at prices of policies without black boxes. They arent always cheaper.
