Uni Decision Advice

Hi,
I'm currently in my second year of A-levels, and I've applied to Bsc Computer Science.
These are my offers:
- Newcastle (Partners offer, can request placement year)
- Cardiff (with placement year)
- Royal Holloway (1 grade higher offer) (with placement year)
- Surrey (with placement year)
- Leicester (with placement year)
I need to start thinking of an insurance and I really need some help to decide. (Newcastle is probably my firm because I have a Partners offer)
I'd really like to hear from current students or just anyone who knows about these universities and cities because I haven't visited the last 3 unis in person only the top two. Like how the Uni courses are, the accommodation, nightlife, help offered to those who want to do placement years and what sort of companies student at these unis go to.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

go on offer holder days to get a feel yourself. Or try googling for student reviews on youtube.

Surrey is on a hill overlooking Guildford but in easy walking of the town centre. So it has quite a tranquil feeling withing a town setting. It has close links with London and a really good industrial year programme, leading to a strong postgrad employment stat. It seems to have close links with the hospital, giving lots of research links there.

i went to cardiff for and open day and the atmosphere is very party/lively which i thought was a bit of a selling point. the accommodation prices aren’t too bad either and they are one of the leading unis in scientific research im pretty sure. can’t say much for the others but im sure they’re great too - leicester is meant to be good for nightlife and a decent uni

If you google the uni (and sometimes the course) student reviews/experience, you can often find stuff on youtube that might help

Hi there!

First of all - big congratulations on all your offers!
So great to hear you applied and received an offer to Cardiff, I am a student here in my fourth year and love it so much! I think its the best place to be a student.

Th accommodation is good, there's quite a range for your preference and preferred vibe. Also I think many of them have been updated since I was in first year, which is good news for you haha. One of my favourite things is that after first year, (and some in first year), pretty much all live in one area, called Cathays, which is super close to the main uni buildings (including computer science building, which is a brand new building too), and super close to city centre, bute park; everything is in like a 20 minute walk. This also means there is a great sense of community, also helped by our amazing students' union, where there are societies for everyone and events on all the time to get involved with. From sports, to hobby based, to even career boosting societies who hold events with people in industry and such. I helped organise an event from an IBM champion the other month, where we had lots of computer scientists eager to come and ask questions.

The nightlife in Cardiff is known to be good, with a range of venues. Again the students' union also hold many different types of events, our Wednesday club nights are very popular. The day time activities are also great and cover many different hobbies and groups of people.

So great that you are thinking of a placement year, they are great opportunities to grow your career and network. Some of the companies students go to work with every year are: Blackberry, BT, GCHQ, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, Microsoft, Red Bull Racing, Renishaw and more! So some really excellent opportunities and links.

I hope this is helpful, I know it might seem like a lot, but any other questions please let me know!

Hello @stay143

Congratulations of your offer from Leicester! Although I do not study computer science and my course does not involve a placement year, hopefully I will be able to give you a good overview on the accommodation and nightlife! To find out more about computer science course specifically, I would recommend using UniBuddy which will enable you to speak to a current study at Leicester who studies computer science! https://le.ac.uk/study/chat

There is a great selection of accommodation at Leicester. We have two sites - Village Accommodation and City Accommodation. The City Accommodation is more high-rise buildings and is only a five minute walk to campus whereas the Village Accommodation is less high-rise and has lots of gorgeous green spaces. It is around a 10/15 minute bus ride away from main campus and the university provides a regular free shuttle bus. It runs frequently and on weekdays and weekends . Both sites are equally as sociable and both sites are primarily used by first-year students. I stayed in City Accommodation in my first year. This was because I'm from London so I quite liked the urban feel and I am known to need 12 alarms to wake up (if I don't snooze them all) so living closer to campus was more practical for me. Compared to what my friends were paying for their accommodation at other universities, I would say Leicester accommodation is a good value for money. There are lots of different room types available at Leicester (e.g. ensuite, shared bathroom, studio, micro-flat, townhouse) to fit all budgets.

The nightlife in Leicester is also good! Majority of people will go out on a Friday or Saturday and there are some regular clubs that students do to. Additionally, there is a massive Wetherspoons students go to. A lot of the bars in the city centre also do student discounts. Another night that is popular for going out are Wednesday nights. This is the student night and takes place in the O2 Academy on main campus. Students attend with either friends or with their societies, sometimes in normal clothing or sometimes in fancy dress to match the theme of the event or if their society is organising a themed social.

I hope that this had provided a useful perspective! Please let me know if you would like further detail on anything or if you have any other questions.
