Brighton or York LGBTQ+

I’m going to be studying mental health nursing, and I know York is a more prestigious university but I’ve heard that when it comes to health profession courses this doesn’t matter quite as much. I love the city of York, it’s beautiful but the reason I’m drawn to University of Brighton is the LGBTQ+ scene. I come from a small town so would really like to be somewhere that makes it very easy to meet other people in the community and from what I’ve heard York doesn’t have much of an LGBTQ+ scene (I know it doesn’t have even one gay club). I understand there will always be LGBTQ+ people around but I’m not convinced that York will provide me with the social/dating experience I’m looking for. Has anybody been to Brighton and can tell me if it’s worth it for that side of socialising? And on the other hand anybody who has experience at University of York and can give me an idea of what it’s like?

Hi, from the same person who posted, just want to add that I’m a lesbian because I know that experiences can depend on sexuality/identity.

Hi!

We have some amazing blog posts written by our students, where they share their experience of the LGBTQ+ scene in York. There's also this vlog from George - hopefully these will give you some insights into life at York 🙂

hi anon!

Brighton has a pretty big reputation for being LGBT friendly. From our massive pride weekend in August to our many LGBT bars and Revenge, our gay club. There is also the Queery - a sober space/bookshop/cafe that runs events pretty much every day like a weekly queer film club!

Brighton Uni is also very Queer friendly! we have heaps of LGBT Support as well as our LGBT Society Their events are really good I've gone to quite a few. their end of semester events are amazing
Personally as a LGBT student I've never faced any discrimination here but if i ever did there is a great disclosure system

Also, if you have received an offer ,I'd also highly suggest joining the Unibuddy Community! There is a LGBT chat there so you can meet other lgbt students. There is also a Lesbian chat there so you can meet fellow lesbians that will be attending!

I hope this helps, and if you have any questions please feel free to ask!

york offer holder here with my best friend in brighton!! the social aspect of it is great if you have friends to go with in brighton. last time i visited them, we went to r-bar (revenge's bar) which does a LOT of drag shows. as for york, they have a WLW society as well as "YorQueer", another LGBT society ^^ Leeds is a 20 minute train ride away which i'm pretty sure you could find some gay clubs/bars to attend there if needs be
