UCAT

Hi,
I’m gonna be applying to study med next yr so i’ll be taking the ucat this summer.
I wanna start doing some revision (maybe like 30min a week?) now just to familiarise myself with the exam and get lots of practice in bc i learn best through repetition over long periods of time. I also think that if i cram all my revision in the recommended 6-8 week period i’ll be super stressed and definitely end up burning myself out so i wanna do some now just to feel more prepared. However i don’t wanna run out of resources so what are the best things to use to prepare for the ucat?
I am gonna get medify a month before my ucat but i was wondering what the other (preferably free) resources available are bc i dont want to finish all the official resources quickly.
Thanks!!

Hi, it’s definitely good to see that you’re starting early, however a lot of people say that anything more than about 8 weeks can lead to burnout or a plateau in progress.

I’d say you can still start now, but don’t do too much all at once.

A free resource I used was Passmedicine. For DM, it’s not the best at all… I’d say the UCAT website is much better for DM, but definitely for the maths and slightly for VR it’s good for something that’s free.

For paid resources, medentry was really really good as the questions aren’t that hard and they have a lot of questions. They also mark you a little higher than medify so it’s good for motivation, however if you do enough of medify’s hard questions it should prepare you better as the real thing will feel way easier.

For QR I’d advise getting really familiar with basic GCSE maths, my sister did a few papers as fast as possible and got 2960! And USE THE MEDIFY/MEDENTRY SKILLS TRAINERS, they’re so good 😭

Personally, if you’re thinking of getting a paid resource, choose medify. I used Medentry and the questions were a lot harder in the real exam. ( I got 2670 when I scored avg 2840 in Medentry)

Definitely get medify! The mocks are hard and totally prepare you for the real thing.
I wouldn’t start too early. I did mine in early September and started revising late July. My first official UCAT mock was 2100 Band 2 and my real score was 3070 Band 1.

Do you mean applying this year then starting med school next year? Or applying next year and starting the year after that?
Realistically, you shouldn't worry about the UCAT until it is the year that you intend to apply, so if you aren't applying this year, you shouldn't be taking the test or studying yet.
What year are you in?

Ah they must have made a small mistake in their original post then 🙂
If they see this, it's fine to start studying now in small quantities, just don't overdo it and forget about your exam results. You can easily resit the ucat, but it is much harder to get into medical school with resit grades.
