GCSE grades for Uni

I'm y11 and I am studying Eng lang Eng lit Maths further maths triple science stats and computer science and drama. I think I can get 8 to 9s in maths further maths computer science chem and phy and 7 in bio and stats. However, I'm getting 5-6 in english subjects and drama. I wanted to get into the top universities but I'm quite worried about my english messing me up. Do you think my grades worth a shot at the top 5 unis?

btw I wanted to study maths and computer science and my a level options are maths further maths computer science and chem

I'm not too sure on the answer to your question, but I do know that its worthwhile seeing what extra courses and extra curriculum activities that you can do in your spare time to get extra UCAS points. For example; I did the Extended Project Qualification (A*) and a Bronze Arts Award, and the National Citizenship Service (NCS). I also know that you can get points from doing the Duke of Edinburgh (DoE), or Critical Thinking or General Studies as an extra A Level.

hiya, im also in year 11 and my school often host these lecture sessions where some of the top universities come in and speak to us. cambridge visited a few weeks back and i asked about gcse grades. they said that most universities don't even look at your gcses. the only instance in which they do is to compare them to your expected a-level results as your gcses are your last public exam you sit before applying. hope this helpss x

But does english and drama counts towards the prediction as it has nothing to do with computer science or maths, do you think my grades would affect my application?

i don't think so. she said that they look at it in the way that if you got all 4s in GCSES then get predicted all A*s for your a-levels, it might be a bit suspicious or smth

I think it depends on the uni, some definitely do take GCSEs into account, I know 100% that LSE do as it's clear on their website, they want the majority at 8/9s, when you say the top 5, which ones are you talking about? most unis will say whether they look at GCSEs on their websites, some of the top unis want a minimum 6 in English

Some unis do look at GCSEs, I know LSE do for Economics related courses as it's clear on their website, and they want the majority at 7/8/9 (Most likely 8/9s for this uni!) some others do as well but it's course specific. for Maths related courses LSE say this:
"GCSEsA strong set of GCSE grades including several at A (or 7) and A* (or 8-9) GCSE English Language and Mathematics grades no lower than B (or 6)We also consider your overall GCSE subject profile"
Warwick say this for computer science: "TMUA scores will be assessed alongside other factors (including GCSEs, contextual indicators and predicted grades) to determine which applicants receive an offer"

How about Oxbrige and UCL and imperial, do they care tho if I get a 5 in eng and drama while I'm doing maths and cs (with 9s on those) since unlike economics there is less to write so I assume the requirement of eng would be lesser?

You should be fine for UCL as they only want 4s at GCSE for Maths and CS, not sure about the others?

This isn't completely true - some courses have GCSE grade expectations so of course you have to meet them.

You're quite right, only a few take them into account

Well just saying they weren't being totally honest. Some degrees require English and/or Maths GCSEs at certain grades even though you don't need them at A level.

Hi, although only the subjects specific to your course is really looked at, the top unis like Oxford and Cambridge WILL look at your overall grades as an example of your work ethic.

Cambridge has no GCSE grade requirements, so what the lecturer said was not dishonest.

Read what they actually say 'We will look at your GCSE results as an indicator of your academic performance. But this will be within the context of the performance of the school/college where you achieved your GCSEs.'

So it isn't true that GCSEs don't matter ..

There are no grade requirements at Cambridge. GCSEs are looked at as part of the overall picture. Thus for example a good candidate who has a 4 or 5 in one subject might obtain a place. Some universities publish grade requirements for specific subjects. Others don't. No competitive university has any need to be dishonest about its entrance requirements.
