Uni Of siena Dentistry

Hey guys,

I'm a British student in year 13 and potentially looking to study dentistry abroad, in particular maybe at Sienna italy for the dentistry programme in english. Obviously other countries like Spain look appealing as well but cost is a major factor as you don't get financial support from the UK government to study abroad. If anyone from sienna is studying dentistry from UK or any other countries within the EU (I don't want to sit the ORE afterwards lol) have any advice about admissions i'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi, 🙂

From my own research if you're looking to go places like Georgia that will not be an issue, plus it's cheaper (downfall is though you would have to sit the ORE exam after which is why I also stopped looking into Georgia). I'm not entirely sure about other countries in the EU except I am pretty sure you could get into Bulgaria/Romania which is in the EU (Downfall here is it's quite expensive unless cost is not an issue for you). With Italy it doesn't matter because they don't really look at a levels they care about ur performance on their exam (I believe called the IMAT). That is what they use to choose applicants although be warned there is quite a lot of biology on the exam so you would need to revise. Are their any universities abroad that have appealed to you?

The thing is with Italy is that the competition is similar to that of the UK, most of the universities they require Maths ,biology, Chemistry and sometimes physics at around a grade B-A*. As well, you would have to take a gap year to sit the IMAT which is very difficult. If i was you i'd look at Bulgaria, Spain and Hungary. As most of their schools are approved by the GMC, thus don't have to take the PLAB or ORE. Apply early though, as competition is only getting higher even in countries abroad.

This wouldn't be a problem for plovdiv as long as you get around 97% in the entrance exam, and you could probably get into Georgia, but i would not recommend you go there.

Hi! The only thing is wouldn't Bulgaria be extremely expensive and I don't think you can take out a student loan. That's just a slight concern for me because i'll have to work in order to pay tuition fees before I can even go.

Even Italy would cost around £10,000 with living too a year, probably more tbh. Unfortunately it's really hard to get loans to study abroad. I had looked into siena myself, and it just wasn't realistic. I chose Bulgaria in the end, roughly for living and education is around £20,000 a year, But, most of the people here are funded from family and parents. Possibly have a sit down with your parents and see if they would be willing to support your choice to be a dentist, you could easily pay them back once you come back to England if they wanted it back.

Hey I thought everyone had to give the LDS or ORE exam anyways to become a professional dentist or you have to be supervised under the first yr or smth like that. I think Bulgaria and Georgia are the most appealing personally if we get through 5-6yrs the ORE can’t be too bad let’s be real.

Don’t go Georgia, ur at risk of ur degree not being recognised as it’s not accepted by the GDC. Go Bulgaria

Nothing, just register with GDC. Couple hundred pounds

Reply 15

No exam, but a list of other musts:

1.

GDC registration is £621 this year.

2.

You should read all the all the GDC Standards, Scope of Practice, CPD documents

3.

You must have professional indemnity (take a deep breath, it's personalised, but full time is thousands...)

4.

I recommend BDA membership- great for support with contracts, excellent free CPD and journal

You can't currently work in the NHS without a performer number and you'll have some requirements for that based on your training and experience -it has changed a lot over the past few years alone, so check the Performers list regulations for the latest requirements. Quite a lot of overseas trained dentists seem to need additional radiography training for example.

hey! I'm in Canada and am also looking to apply to dentistry at Siena, though their application process is stressing me out lol. they havent posted any info on admissions as of yet so I can't complete the Universitaly application since idk the documents they want, and when i've emailed them about it they told me to wait until July for the call to applications. Have you found out anything about admissions? Also if you want to prep together for the IMAT lmk!
