Prelims and predicted grades HELP

What do teachers use to predict your grades? is it purely off of prelim grades?

For maths I panicked in the non calculator paper and failed but got 84% in the calculator paper which was the week after. This gives me an average of a C grade. I always get A in maths so both the teacher and I were surprised. They have said they are happy for me to choose advanced higher maths as I got A1 in nat 5 and I understand the concepts, do well on past papers etc etc.

However I am a bit disappointed that I panicked and failed which caused me to have a C. I want to do medicine and I need all A. I am confident in maths and get over 75% when I do past papers so hopefully will get A in exam but the prelim grade that gets sent to SQA may be a C.

Say something happens and my real exam results were miscounted and I were given a B when I actually got an A. But since my exam result is higher than my predicted grade, would I still be able to appeal?

Also I got all A in my other subjects so this C is quite annoying especially as I had panicked.

I think your worries are irrational. The odds of your exam marks being miscounted are slim. Plus, when you make an appeal they don't actually use your prelim results in their decisions of your grade. To quote the SQA website:

"The Appeals process included a marking review of your SQA-marked assessments by our most experienced markers [...] A marking review checked that:

all parts of your SQA-assessments were marked

the marking was in line with national standards

the marks given for each answer were totalled correctly and

the correct result was entered on our system."

The only case in which the SQA would need prelim results and any other assessments that you do in-school would be if you had to use the Examinations Exceptional Circumstances Consideration Service (EECCS) which is for if you missed an exam for a reason you couldn't control.

To summarise, the only time your prelim result would be considered and impact your final grade is if you missed the exam. So long as you revise well and show up for the exam you should have no issues whatsoever. Good luck and I hope this eases your worries!

Edit: As for predicted grades, they are largely based on prelim results due to their similarities with the final exam. But they're not entirely based on them. If your teacher knows that your performance in the prelim is abnormal then they'll probably still take it into account but wont throw away their knowledge of how skilled you are because of one bad paper.
