Mental health at sixth form

Hi all,

For context in year 11 right before my GCSEs I ended up in hospital due to mental health issues (due to trying to delete), my school gave zero support in this but luckily I still managed to get decent GCSEs. My secondary school sent a handover explaing what happened to my college

In year 12 as a result of this and to prevent such incident occuring again in the future due to my mental health, I decided to reach out tp SENDCO teacher for a small room access arrangment however I felt as though he was very unaccomodating, unsupportive and he told me in the real world / uni I won't get a small room so I should get used to doing exams in a sports hall. I told him what happened during GCSEs, one thing I said in particularly was that I said I started antidepressants AFTER gcse bcs I didn't want to suffer side effects / anything unexpected during exam season but he brushed it off, saying that 'So you chose to ignore the doctor's advice during GCSEs' which was honestly shocking, going on antidepressants isn't an easy decision and I felt like he didn't take me seriously, delaying treatment isn't 'ignoring' a doctor

Anways fast foward after much struggle I did manage to get a small room thanks to my form tutor who advocated for me, but now this form tutor has gone on maternity leavr recently. I'm in year 13, my mocks are next week and my real exams are fast approaching but this accomodation has been randomly removed. I sent my new form tutor this text message:

Hi ____ apologies for texting you on the weekend, for all my exams I’ve had a small room accommodation due to my history of mental health, however I just checked my KA3 timetable & saw that this accommodation has been randomly removed, I was just wondering if there’s anything that can be done about this in time for KA3

I'm just really worried as previously in year 12 when I sought out exam arrangements for my mental health, the sendco teacher wasn't very accomodating and I felt like he didn't take me seriously (although I finally got it at the end after much struggle ) so I'm afraid the same thing will happen to me again

Do you think this text message was ok, honestly I don't know why my sendco teacher treats me like a liar, I don't even want to speak to him in first person anymore bcs last time I did I ended up breaking down bcs I felt like I was getting zero suppory and being treated like a fraud

Hi there,

Firstly, we're really sorry to hear that your SENDCO in Year 12 responded to you that way when you opened up about what had happened for you during your GCSEs. It sounds like you're working really hard to make sure you've got the support and accommodations you need to help manage during KA3.

It sounds like the text you sent to ask about this is really well articulated and very reasonable. If you find that you don't feel like you're being listened to, sometimes it can be helpful to seek support from a staff member, or even a family member that you trust who could try to advocate for you.
It's really important that you're able to get the support you need, as this is you trying to keep yourself safe and manage your mental health as best you can - and you deserve support.

If you're ever experiencing thoughts of suicide, please know that HOPELINE247 are here to support you. We're available 24/7 - just call 0800 068 4141, text 'HOPE' to 88247 or email [email protected]. You can also webchat with us via our website www.papyrus-uk.org 💜
