References MSc Application

Hi there,

New to TSR! I’ve been out of HE for quite some years (nearly 12) now, and am looking to apply to do a Comp Sci/Data Sci related MSc.

Where a uni asks for a reference within two years of course start date (mine are entirely likely to be professional), would a university ever accept references from a decade or so ago (big) IF needing an academic one to sit alongside professional ones?

Any info much appreciated!

Cheers,
Marzinho 😊

The obvious response is 'email the university and ask'. It's not unheard of though. When I applied to my master's after a long period away from HE, I asked my old teachers for references and that worked just fine.

Hello! Each university has different requirements for letters of recommendation. In the case of City St George's, University of London, we only expect a professional reference from a current or recent employer or supervisor if the applicant has graduated for more than 2 years. Hope this information is helpful.

Best wishes,
Audrey
