university help - LAW

Hi guys,

I want to go into a career in law but I'm not sure which area yet but I know I want to go into law. The unis I'm debating between is Exeter (law with business) or Cardiff (law with criminology).

Which is the best for jobs and just quality of teaching? Any advice or knowledge you have of these universities pls lmk! Thank you.

The law with business course at Exeter is based at the Penryn campus in Falmouth which is 100 miles from Exeter and a 2 hour drive down into Cornwall. So that's something to consider. Other than that I would recommend Exeter over Cardiff.

As you probably know, you can apply to five universities. Which ones to apply to depends partly on your predicted or achieved sixth form grades.

Try not to fret too much about rankings. These mean little or nothing in real life. Many employers in the legal sector recruit university-blind. Employability depends on the individual candidate.

These are the universities I received offers from, which is why I'm seeking advice. I'm the first in my family to attend university, so choosing the right one is a crucial decision for me. Thank you for your responses! Putting rankings aside, which university would you recommend?

I have no view on that. Choose the one you think you will most enjoy.

If it helps, I attended the offer holders day at Exeter on Saturday (1st March). I spoke to the course directors for law who said at this stage, if you have an offer, it is still very possible to switch between the different strands. Indeed it seems many students switch during the first year of the course. So if the distance to Penryn is holding you back you could contact the admissions team and ask about switching to the straight LLB in Exeter, or to the LLB with study abroad or industry placement pathways. Given what I heard on Saturday I would say ask to switch to the straight 3 year LLB and then you can always add sandwich years once you get to Exeter. Switching to the LLB would mean you were based in Exeter at the main Streatham campus which is a lovely place to spend three years. Good luck to you.

Hi there!

So great to hear you are considering Cardiff, I am a student here in my fourth year and love it so much! I think its the best place to be a student.

The accommodation is good, there's quite a range for your preference and preferred vibe. Also I think many of them have been updated since I was in first year, which is good news for you haha. One of my favourite things is that after first year, (and some in first year), pretty much all live in one area, called Cathays, which is super close to the main uni buildings (including the law building), and super close to city centre, bute park; everything is in like a 20 minute walk. This also means there is a great sense of community, also helped by our amazing students' union, where there are societies for everyone and events on all the time to get involved with. From sports, to hobby based, to even career boosting societies who hold events with people in industry and such. There is a great law society, and commercial awareness society which really help boost your network and opportunities. The nightlife in Cardiff is known to be good, with a range of venues. Again the students' union also hold many different types of events, our Wednesday club nights are very popular. The day time activities are also great and cover many different hobbies and groups of people.

There are great opportunities to grow your career and network. There is a great opportunity for law students to get involved, with real life cases in pro bono work, especially in the "innocence" project, you can see more on this link here. The staff are amazing with many internationally recognised academics, embedded in the UN, NATO, G7 and Welsh Government! Some of my friends do law and they love it. Also great to have it mixed with criminology, as you'll also get the benefits from the school of social sciences. Which is 3rd in the UK for their research in Education, and 10th in the UK for their research in Sociology, Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021! You will also have the opportunity to study abroad or do a year in industry, which is another amazing experience in itself.

I hope this is helpful, I know it might seem like a lot, but any other questions please let me know!

On reflection, I have heard more good things recently about Cardiff than about Exeter. A friend from school is an Exeter alumna (History) and a benefactrix of the university. She has expressed concern about social stratification arising from accommodation pricing. But visit both universities and see what you think.

You get that at so many unis now. My son is at Warwick and my daughter is considering Exeter. The most expensive accommodation at Exeter is still cheaper than some of the accommodation on the Warwick campus.

He's enjoying himself. He is in second year and living in Leamington Spa this year after being in halls first year. He enjoys the student community there. It's big enough to have fun but small enough to always see plenty of people you know when you go out.

He was in Westwood. The block he was in is actually closed for a refurb this year and it needed it!
It was one of the more affordable options and it was a bit tired to say the least. He loved it though and made some good friends who he has lived with for second year.

Hi Amy_42018,

I'm glad to hear you're considering Exeter! I'm currently in my second year studying Law and French Law, so I hope I can give you some good insight.

Exeter is a Top 10 uni for Law Graduate Prospects, and is highly sought after by Magic and Silver Circle law firms, who frequent our law career fairs - this is just one great opportunity to network and get an idea of life beyond the degree. Whilst many of these firms do focus on more commercial aspects, you will still get a wide appreciation from other areas, and there are representatives from other firms that focus on, let's say, family law, or human rights law. And, the standard LLB has 7 mandatory areas of law that you will study - criminal, contract, constitutional and administrative, equity, EU, land, and tort law. So, don't worry just yet about what area to focus on.

I'd say the teaching quality is really good here. I really enjoy the lecturers, and they are super friendly and more than willing to help you with any queries during office hours. Some of the lectures are genuinely so fun (I think my favourites have been in tort), which just makes the experience so much nicer.

If you would like to know anything about accom, or even the city itself, do let me know and I will reply as soon as I can - but, I hope this helps to answer your question.
