Best Uni for Engineering?

Out of these:

Birmingham- Aerospace
Southampton- Aerospace
Exeter- Mechanical
Cardiff- Mechanical
Sussex- Robotic & Mechatronic
Brighton- Aerospace
Salford: Mechanical
Kingston: Aerospace
Kent: Mechanical

What would they be, in order from best to worst? I don't mind location, fees, or anything else besides the quality of education and resources.

What are your grade predictions?

Do you meet the A level subject and any specific GCSE requirements for each course?

Which actually interests you more - Mech or Aero?

Have you looked at each course in detail?

Do any of these courses offer a placement year?

Have you been to any Uni Open Days?

Hi @yulkihc

I don't personally study aerospace engineering here at Kingston so can only give you an insight into what I know.

I study at the Knights Park campus which has great resources and facilities. I have also been to the Roehampton Vale campus, that you would be based at, and the whole campus is dedicated to engineering courses so the facilities cater well to those courses. I was impressed by the wind turbine and 3D printers and they always have technicians on hand to help you.

In terms of teaching again I can only talk from my personal experience but I found my lecturers have a lot of great knowledge about the industry and set assignments that are therefore relevant.

I will leave a few useful links to previous posts I have done that you may find useful.

I would also really recommend coming to one of our open days as you can see the facilities for yourself and speak to lectures and current students. You can find more information about upcoming events on the website Open Days and events - Kingston University London

Hope this is helpful and good look in making your decision

Hi, its great to hear you are considering Southampton!

You can find more about Aerospace at Southampton here, with the multiple course options available to you. The resources Southampton offers are incredible, and being a Russel Group University, the courses are respected. There are also very exciting extra / super curricular opportunities available from the University of Southampton, such as formula student.

I think going to an open day is very important for finding more about the course, the teaching, and the opinion of current students - all of which will impact your final decision. You may also be able to tour the department and see the resources available to you as a student.

Hope this can help

Hello,

It is great to see that you are doing your research and finding out what is best for you. We are excited to see that we have made your shortlist of potential options.

In terms of our Mechanical Engineering courses we have two pathways for you, we have the 3 year bachelor of engineering honors degree a.k.a BEng (Hons), we also offer an integrated 4 year masters route a.k.a. MEng (Hons). I will link both below and recommend you have a read of our course finder page as it breaks down the course nicely.

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering
MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

I would also recommend coming to an Open day at Salford (as well as the other institutions on your list) as it is the best way to answer all the questions you may have about the course, student life, extra curricular activities and much more. I will put the link to the booking page below.

Open Days - Salford

I do hope this helps and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Reputation wise:
1) Southampton
followed by:
Birmingham, Exeter, Sussex & Cardiff
Hard to make any discernible differences between the rest, they aren’t particularly esteemed faculties in all honesty.

University league tables give a good insight into which unis rank highly for a specific course, but I wouldn't solely rely on them.

Southampton is very prestigious for Aerospace, as it has good facilities and teaching.

Unfortunately league tables are actually a terrible source of information, they utilize an arbitrary methodology, poor underlying data, extreme skew & volatility… they are just a tool to generate ad revenue.

Hiya,

Awesome to hear you're considering Cardiff! Its a brilliant university for mechanical engineering. Quality of teaching is high quality and there are lots of opportunities within the course itself.

For example, lots of students engage with Cardiff Racing, which is the Formula Student Team for racing. Engineering students can get involved with the design, development and testing of the car, and its super cool!

I won't throw a bunch of statistics at you but if you wanted to have a look, generally students think quite highly of the course, and in general students are satisfied with the course (source).

If you wanted to know more about what studying engineering here is like the School of Engineering has useful info on all their kit, including stuff like labs, specialist facilities, study and social spaces specific to the engineering building etc.

I hope that helps!
