Accommodation

My daughter attends Salford university but will be doing her internship in London. She starts March 14th (this month) but she still has no accommodation!!! So we would greatly appreciate any advice as to where is a good, safe place for her to stay for 6weeks?

Hi~try to check some rental platforms. My friend rented a short-term accommodation in London at uhomes.com and heard there is a lot of choices. Hope this can help you.

Hey Stace,
Hope you're doing well.

I can imagine how stressful it must be for your daughter, especially with the internship right around the corner! Finding accommodation for a short-term stay in London can be tricky, but there are a few options you can consider that could suit her needs. Here are some suggestions for safe, convenient, and flexible accommodations for her six-week internship:

1. Short-Term Rental Apartments (Airbnb)

Pros: Flexible check-in/check-out, more privacy, kitchen facilities to save on food costs.

Cons: Can be more expensive depending on location and type of property.

Recommendation: Look for places in central areas like Zone 1 (e.g., Soho, Covent Garden, or Camden), or even in Zone 2 (e.g., Shoreditch, Islington, or Clapham) for more affordable options. Check reviews to ensure safety and quality.

2. Student Accommodation Providers
Many universities or private providers offer short-term student accommodation, especially during the holidays or off-term periods.

Examples:

Student Roost

Unite Students

iQ Student Accommodation

Pros: Safe, fully furnished, and often includes utilities.

Cons: They may be located outside central London, but you can find places with good transport links.

3. Hostels or Budget Hotels
If she doesn’t mind a more basic, communal experience, staying in a hostel or a budget hotel could be a good option.

Pros: Affordable, social atmosphere.

Cons: Shared facilities and space; may not be as private.

Recommendation: Look for ones with high ratings like YHA London Central or Clink78 Hostel.

4. Serviced Apartments
These are great for short stays and often come with additional services (cleaning, laundry, etc.).

Pros: Fully furnished, more home-like than a hotel, usually close to public transport.

Cons: Can be pricier than other options.

Recommendation: Check out companies like The Plum Guide for high-quality, vetted short-term apartments.

5. Shared Accommodation (Flatshare)
A flatshare might offer a more affordable option and a chance to meet people.

Pros: Lower cost than renting a full apartment.

Cons: Less privacy than a solo rental.

Recommendation: Websites like SpareRoom or Gumtree often have short-term sublets.

6. University Accommodation (If Available)
Some universities have accommodation that is available to non-students during holiday periods. It’s worth checking with Salford University to see if they have any agreements with London-based accommodations that might offer short-term stays.
General Tips:

Safety First: Choose accommodations in safe neighborhoods, ideally close to her internship location or easily accessible by public transport.

Transport Links: Make sure the accommodation is near a tube or train station to make commuting to her internship easy.

Budget: Plan the budget carefully. London can be expensive, so check if there are any discounts or deals for long-term stays.

Flexibility: Given that the stay is only for 6 weeks, she should aim for accommodations with flexible cancellation or extension policies.

Hope this helps.

Thanks & Regards
Coventry University Student Ambassador.

Hey @Stace84 ,

Fab that your daughter is starting her internship soon - so exciting! Accommodation can be really stressful when searching, particularly in larger cities like London where there are lots of options. I'd definitely echo what Coventry have advised in their great message - I'd recommend looking at student accommodation providers (iQ, Campus Living Villages, Sanctuary Students, Unite students etc) to see if they have short term lettings, as they're very student-centric and quite upfront with costs, what's available etc. I would also recommend her reaching out to our AskUS support team (0161 295 0023, or here online) - whilst she is on placement, she's still a student with us so they'll be able to offer support and guidance on her options!

I hope all goes well with finding somewhere, and she enjoys her placement!
