Further Maths A-level

I'm currently in year 11 and I just wanted to know realistically what I should aim to get in my maths gcse to do a-level further maths comfortably.

Most schools stipulate a grade you need in GCSE Maths in order to take FMaths. We ask for a grade 8, some schools want a 9.

do you do fm gcse?
i got 9 in maths and 8 in fm. in my school you had to get an 8 in maths to do further a level and i probs agree with this. you should be pretty comfortable with the gcse maths content to the point where your not really losing marks up until the last few hard qs. fm in year 12 was pretty fine for me but i do think it was made easier by doing fm gcse. once you get to y13 it definitely gets a lot harder, especially core pure, but as long as you are pretty comfortable in maths gcse and can put in the time for a level then you should be fine!

Thank you! I don't do further maths gcse and I am currently predicted an 8 so that's why I'm a little on edge about taking it. On the other hand, I know that when it comes to applying to top unis it can make you stand out a lot more. Sooo I don't really know

what other subjects are you going to take? in my school we had to do 3 + fm which is defo why i struggled in y13 as the workload just got too much, however if you are doing 2 + fm then i think you should be fine

The sixth form I want to go to highly encourages you to take 4 A-levels so I'm probably going to take maths, fm, computing and economics. However, if you drop your fourth A-level by December they let you take an EPQ so I think I will see how it goes with fm and drop if needed

In my school you need a grade 8 to take further maths, but realistically I think to take further maths you would want to be aiming for a 9 in normal maths or a 7+ in further maths.
I know that a few schools require a nine in normal maths however.

I say go for it, I'm currently in year 13 and got a 7 in GCSE maths (I didn't do further). I'm now on A*A* in Maths and further maths at A-level and got offers for maths at University.

The main question here for me is how much do you enjoy maths?

A 8/9 at GCSE tells me you can do maths. But a big clue is how much do you enjoy it? People who love maths tend to find it instinctive (to a point) and intuitive to learn.

Personally I'd pick a 8 at GCSE from someone who loves maths, than a 9 from someone who worked really hard.

Most schools just want an 8 in GCSE Maths. If your school offers GCSE FM, it's good, but not required to have as good of a grade to enroll in it. I've applied to a specialist maths school, and for me to do Further Maths A-Level, all they want is an 8 in GCSE Maths. If that is the expectation from a maths school, then you would be fine with any other sixth form's expectation.

Comfortably - I'd say 9 if you want an A*, but it depends on your cirumstances. Many people with 9s in maths GCSE will struggle with further maths A level (most people will find it difficult at some point because it is a difficult A level). On the other hand, people who got 8s in GCSE maths but love maths will be okay.

This actually makes me really happy because i am currently on a grade 7 in maths and i'd love to do maths A level and maybe even further maths A level. Though i've been reconsidering because my maths teacher says that A level maths is super hard and i may not do too well...So now i actually feel really inspired

My teacher said she didn't recommend I took it, now I always get the best in the class 😂
