MMU Accommodations: New Medlock House vs Needham Court

Hey all,

I'm a undergrad firm offer holder for MMU (2025/26 year), and I'm looking into staying in halls, but I'm stuck between two places. I'm considering New Medlock House, which seems to have good facilities and amenities (gym and social areas), but I'm worried about the social stuff since there's 5 people max per flat, and it's out of the way from the rest of the accoms. My other option is Needham Court, which doesn't seem as good but still decent (big room and alright living space I think), but mainly has more people per flat and is closer to the rest of the MMU halls.

Basically all the en suite halls around there are like £200 a week, I'll be skint either way, so I want to get the most for what I'm paying for. But at the same time I want to be able to meet people and make connections easily, especially during 1st year.

Any advice on which to pick? Anyone that's stayed there before (or students around the area) got any input that could help?

Hey there!
I’m a third-year student now, but I’ve definitely been in the same spot you’re in, weighing up accommodation options. Honestly, a 5-person flat can still be pretty social! I stayed in a 10-bed place and then moved to a 4-bed flat, and in the end, the smaller one ended up being super sociable. We just all clicked and used to invite other flats over for meals, pre-drinks, you name it. So, I wouldn’t stress too much about the number of people it doesn’t always mean a bigger flat is more social, if that makes sense.
Both the accommodations you’re considering are really lovely, and I’ve heard great things about them especially the kitchens and facilities. If you're feeling unsure, maybe think about where your lectures are likely to be? I did a health-related subject, so I was at MMU’s Brooks Building a lot, and I made sure to choose somewhere nearby since I wasn’t keen on walking too far 😂.
Also, while it’s tempting to think of first-year accommodation as your main opportunity to make friends, I actually made some of my closest mates later in my uni years a lot of them through societies. It’s a great way to meet people with similar interests, and the conversations are so much easier to start.
So, while it’s important to think about your flatmates and what kind of vibe you want there, remember that uni offers plenty of other ways to be sociable beyond just your accommodation. There’s so much more to explore!
Happy house hunting! 😊
Emily
