Hey if you are joining Derby in September, as a current student I highly recommend you don't. I'm dropping out to restart in first year elsewhere. If I had to describe the uni services in 3 words it would be 'false advertising', 'complacency', and 'coping'. The courses and lecturers tend to be alright - it's just everything surrounding that which makes the uni experience such as accommodation and especially student hub (student services, support, disabilities etc) are horrendous. The city is also miserable, and functions as a big town rather than a city anyway.
There's most likely less than 1500 students living in halls, compared to most unis with about 8k and 2+ unis in the city. So you are entirely missing out on the student life, which is kind of the whole point of uni in my opinion.
Do whatever is best for you of course, I don't know you personally. If you want to live a silent life, private rent (missing out on the uni living experience entirely) for cheaper, and just get a degree qualification then maybe Derby works for you. If you want a student life, want to arrange anything with the university, or want a high level career, I highly recommend you reconsider.
Best of luck
