Hello I am a year 11 student at the moment with an ambition to pursue dentistry.

What can I be doing now and in the near future to build up a strong applicaiton?
Thanks

Work experience! If you can get 2 weeks of shadowing work experience (this can be in more than one place and at different times in the next 18 months) with a dentist, dental hygienist, orthodontist etc. This is not easy to get so start asking now. Ask your own dentist and try any others you could feasibly get to. Address your emails personally to each member of staff rather than the general surgery address. Enclose a cv but keep your email succinct. Be flexible as you could go in any holidays.

Other work experience that’s good includes anything that involves working with people of a different age to you - so a care home, childrens centre, disability centre etc. A leadership role in school or a part time job in cafe, shop or pub etc is also good to show you can deal with difficult situations, time pressures and teamwork etc.

Get good grades.

This document is very useful for seeing what each dental school requires (but always double check entry requirements on their websites because they sometimes change). Good luck!
