Anyone received an offer for UCL Cognitive Neuroscience MSc

Hi guys!

Just wondering if anyone has received an offer for UCL Cognitive Neuroscience and how long did that take from your application submission date?

Thanks

Hey! As someone who did their undergrad at UCL, nothing has ever been gained from contacting admissions. Maybe the department itself can be more helpful but you’ll pretty much always get ‘we’re still assessing your application’ from admissions. That’s mainly because once they send it to the department they really don’t know either. The people who hold you are the departmental admissions tutors.

With your other offer - it’s much easier to ask the offering uni to give you a bit longer, and ideally also push UCL - you may as well try, and try talking to the department not the admissions office. Cog neuro’s own admissions process seems to be, according to past years, one of the longest wait periods and one of the most inflexible. This is probably partly due to their waiting till they have a lot of applications in before they give offers. Saw an FOI request with an average wait time of 120 days (4 months!).

I’ve always felt with RG unis they have something of the attitude that they can ‘afford’ to keep applicants waiting and even loose them because of the waiting because they get so many applications. Not very nice but it is what it is - that’s my round about way of saying pleading with admissions or even the department and ringing them up probably won’t make much difference, since they see you as fairly disposable.

Same!! I’ve emailed them a long time ago, and no response. What did they say when you called them? ( I’m applying for Cogntive neuroscience msc)

Hey, I emailed the department - they said we’d get responses after April 4th

I’m guessing that’s ’at some point from’ April 4th?

Yes very much possible, because I haven’t heard anyone receiving an offer for cognitive neuroscience as of yet

Ah well, it’s good you called. I’ve been psycho analysing the meaning of the wait for the past month, even though I know better than that after three years of UCL delays

Yup, to quote, they said: "Except in exceptional circumstances, we will not start making decisions and sending offers until after the application window closes on 4 April."

lol London unis are notorious for this. What did you study if you don't mind me asking? Whats your overall UCL review? im assuming u enjoyed it since you're applying again but it'd be nice to hear first hand!

Overall I liked ucl, and its problems (bureaucratic slowness, hit and miss lecturers, inconsistent grading) weren’t in my experience that bad and have been shared by my friends from Oxbridge to Manchester to Nottingham. It’s difficult because I know people who suffered much worse - the fact I’m saying it’s okay could completely be due the fact that overall I got a really strong first, but I have to admit that I was in some ways lucky given the inconsistencies in teaching and marking I witnessed.

In general, giving advice on what a uni is like isn’t very helpful. For every uni you hear horror stories and really positive one. Like everything it comes down to luck (who you meet, marks) as much as anything else. Going to any uni is really a shot in the dark - it can be good or bad for a hundred reasons mostly not in your control.

I actually studied anthropology with a focus on evolution. I’m one of the ‘other’ degrees cog neuro says they accept.

Unfortunately that sounds like they’ll only even start the actual selection process now, so another few weeks of waiting seems expected. So much for ‘apply as early as possible’
