Accommodation and Student Life

My name is Nally. I am a second-year student majoring in Media, Communication and Sociology with Quantitative Methods. I’m from Vietnam and I moved to London since October 2023. As an international student, I know how important it is to find the right place to live and make the most of university life. Whether you’re curious about university life, accommodation options, social activities or tips for settling in, I’m here to share my experiences and answer any questions you have😊

Make New Friends & Build a Social Life
One of the easiest ways to make new friends is to join school societies. City St George’s offers a wide range of societies, such as Indian society, Art society, Robotics, Dance society and much more. Engaging in societies helps you to connect with like-minded individuals, giving you a chance to socialize and develop new skills. Additionally, societies often host socials, trips, and networking events, making them a great way to balance academics with fun. Moreover, attending events that are organized by university can help you make new friends and feel part of a community. Whether it is a welcome fair, a networking session or a cultural night, these events can make a huge difference in your university experience.

Choosing the Right Accommodation
For first-year students, I recommend staying at the university accommodation as it is a great way to settle in and meet new friends. Staying at the accommodation is really convenient as you don’t have to deal with utility bills (electricity, water, Wi-Fi) since most halls include utilities in the rent. Moreover, university halls help you to feel more connected to the university community. Accommodation usually has 24/7 security, and on-site support staff, making them a safer option compared to private housing.
City St George’s offer a lot of accommodations and applying for halls is relatively easy. During my first year, I stayed at Romano Court, which is 15 minutes away from the university. The hall is very convenient, there are a lot of groceries, shops and restaurants nearby, and most importantly, Farringdon station is only 4 minutes away. I made a lot of new friends who also lived in the hall. The accommodation hosted a lot of events such as Halloween, Christmas, and New Year for people to stay connected.

Lastly, but most importantly, step out of your comfort zone and enjoy every moment! Studying at City St George’s is a life-changing experience that will broaden your perspective and build your independence. Studying should always be a priority but don’t forget to meet new people, explore new opportunities and make unforgettable memories!

Hi Nally. Thanks for your advice. Do you have any idea of what the average prices look like for halls in central London? The accommodation options at the uni I’ve applied to seem to be fairly premium rooms only with limited options for a cheaper rent. Is it possible to find things for £200 or less a week do you think?

Hi, generally the prices for accommodations in central London tend to be on the expensive side. Alternatively, you can look at options a little bit outside central (I would say Zone 1-2/3) as they tend to be cheaper.
