Find out more about university life at Edge Hill!

Hi my name is Eloise and I am currently a second year psychology student at Edge Hill University.

I wanted to start this thread to introduce myself and offer the chance for anyone to ask any questions or introduce themselves as well! Alongside studying at Edge Hill, I have lived in campus accommodation, been a member of several societies and so much more so I am happy to answer any questions you might have about university life.

Hi there,

There's always lots going on at university to get involved with. I'm currently studying at the Ormskirk campus but there are plenty of events that happen at the St James Campus too. There are lots of student life events such as commuter breakfasts and pop up events as well as the general uni life across the city.

What course have you applied to study?

I'm not sure if it varies between courses, but are lectures spread out over 5 days a week or fewer? I'm trying to work out how many days I will be able to work around uni as I'm a mature student and have financial commitments. Thanks.

This might be an odd question to ask, but how many students would you say there are who live locally and commute to campus rather than living on campus. This is what I’ll be doing and I worry slightly about standing out because of it and having less opportunity to forge connections due to not having flatmates. It also makes me feel, for some reason, like I’m delaying my maturity into adulthood by not moving out.

Hi there,

Don't worry, it's normal to be nervous but there are lots of students who commute! Whilst we have accommodation available on campus, many students choose to commute and you will most likely find many students on your course who commute as well. It is a completely individual decision and there are still so many opportunities for independence and growth that don't rely on moving out. Whilst I cannot give you an exact number of how many students commute, I have met so many students who choose to commute.

Ultimately, you have to make the best decision for you and you can still have an amazing university experience without moving out.

Whilst students will have met their flatmates, most of the time they're on different courses so everyone is still looking to make friends on their course. There is plenty of opportunity to meet new people and often the lecturers encourage you to get to know new people in seminars. Everyone is in the same boat when it comes to meeting people on your course regardless of whether they commute or live on campus.

If you are worried about finding harder to make friends, I would definitely recommend joining societies as they are the best way to meet new people with similar interests. Particularly during the first few weeks, many students will attend societies on their own with the hope to meet new people. I've made lots of new friends this way and many of them commute! You can try out a few different societies and decide what you like and what you would like to carry on. It's great to meet people this way as every is there because they are interested in the society so you will already have something in common!

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi!

So it does vary a little bit between courses however, most courses will not have lecturers every day. For example, I am only in Monday to Wednesday so I have Thursday and Friday without any lectures.

Some courses such as nursing and teaching will generally have higher contact hours meaning you will be in for more days but there are few courses which would be spread out over all 5 days of the week.

What course are you planning on studying?

Hi there!

Not lame at all - it's lovely that you're trying to find out more for your daughter and congratulations on her firming Edge Hill! 🎉

In my first year I stayed in Chancellors South accommodation and I absolutely loved it. It's right near the sports centre and close to the library so was a great location. All of the rooms are very modern and have a nice view of the lakes. However, all of the accommodation is lovely so it's just about seeing what works best for your daughter. I would definitely recommend either visiting the accommodation at an offer holder day/open day or looking at the virtual tours on the website.

As a second year, I am staying on campus again in Woodland Court accommodation which is one of the dedicated 2nd and 3rd year accommodations. The rooms are very similar to Chancellor South but in a townhouse style instead so the kitchen is downstairs and all the rooms are upstairs. All 2nd and 3rd years have the opportunity to apply for accommodation if they would like to and there are certain blocks dedicated for 2nd and 3rd years.

As for the course - I'm honestly really enjoying it! The department is so supportive and there are so many ways to get involved. There is quite a bit of variety between modules and assessments which keeps it interesting and there is plenty of opportunity to find out what you're most interested in. They made the transition from A levels to degree as smooth as possible and they always offer plenty of support throughout the years.

I hope this helps and I'm happy to answer any more questions you or your daughter might have about studying at Edge Hill! And congratulations once again for her offer!

What does the nightlife at Edge Hill usually look like? Does the SU offer night time events?

Hi @HatMcg47 ,

The SU offers night time events most days of the week and these start from welcome week. This varies and can be anything such as a themed night, quiz, live music, etc. They also hold events at different times of the year such as a bingo lingo event and society led nights.

If you are looking for something a little bit different, there is also nightlife in Ormskirk which includes a student night on Wednesday and various quizzes, live music and other events at different venues in the town. The Edge Link bus also runs later on a Wednesday night as it is student night to help students get between campus and the town centre easily and safely!

There is also the option to go into Liverpool as it is only a train away and can offer a variety of different of nightlife.

Hope this helps!
