This is what i learnt:
Moment: Mr Birling’s speech in Act 1 Mr Birling makes a speech about how he doesn’t believe that war is possible due to the great technological progress being made at the time. Dramatic irony: ‘unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable’ Effect: Undermines AB Triplet: ‘aeroplanes’ ‘automobile’s ’ and ‘ships’ Effect: AB is undermined, this progress caused destruction in the world wars Structure: AB has big blocks of text, dominates; Eric and Gerald both have interjections Symbolism: ‘a hard-headed, practical man of business’ Effect: establishes capitalist symbol and views, shows AB pride and what he thinks makes someone successful Exclamation: ‘fiddlesticks!’ when EB acts AB ‘What about war?’
Moment: Birling’s interrogation Mr Birling explains why he felt he had to fire Eva from his works after she was a ‘ring-leader’ of a worker strike. Symbolism: ‘She’d had a lot to say – far too much’ Effect: depicts Eva as a symbol of the lower classes, oppression of the poor, especially women. Ironic, AB thinks people should be out for themselves and here he punished Eva for wanting a living wage. Superlative: ‘come down sharply on some of these people, they’d soon be asking for the earth’ Effect: portrays workers as greedy, ironic. Adverb sharply links to the inspector coming down on AB. Social Responsibility: ‘it’s better to ask for the earth than to take it’- Inspector Effect: telling AB that his own greed is worse than any of Eva’s actions, AB changes the subject. Symbol that the family took Eva’s life (he whole world)
Moment: Gerald reveals his affair with Daisy Renton Sheila reacts very strongly to hearing that Gerald had an affair whilst they had been courting. Mr Birling is intent on the relationship surviving for selfish reasons. Infantilization: ‘Your daughter isn’t living on the moon. She’s here in Brumley too’ Effects: Sheila can’t be protected from reality forever, contrasts fantasy (pre moon landings) to exaggerate this Stage direction: ‘[She hands him the ring]’ Effect: symbolises the end of their relationship Capitalism: ‘you must understand that a lot of young men-’ Effect: AB tries to salvage the relationship by normalizing Gerald’s actions for his own advancement socially and economically. Extended metaphor: ‘hero’ and ‘wonderful fairy prince’ Effect: sarcastic tone, upper class are not free from dishonourable behaviour, wants descend classes
Moment: Eric confesses to being the father Eric returns to the house, the Birlings have worked out that he is the father and will be the last to be questioned by the inspector. Objectification: ‘She was pretty and a good sport’ Effect: shows Eric was only interested in her looks, not actually in love and sexually exploited Eva Repetition/triplet: ‘you killed her…you killed her… you killed them both’ Effect: shows Eric’s anger at his mother and sorrow over his lost child Pronouns: ‘you turned her away… and the child she’d have had too- my child- your own grandchild’ Effects: makes SB take responsibility as it directly affects her, makes her realise consequences. Fragmented speech could represent the disconnection Eric feels in loosing his child or his relationship with his mother breaking down
Moment: the Inspectors parting speech Once the inspector has finished interrogating the Birlings he leaves with parting words encouraging them to take up socialist views. Repetition: ‘there are millions and millions and million of Eva Smiths and John Smiths … all intertwined with our lives’ Effect: shows the great number of people, common names show Eva’s position was common, emphasises social responsibility Biblical reference: ‘We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.’ Effects: deliberately references the bible perhaps to appeal to a majority Christian audience Dramatic irony: ‘will be taught in fire and blood and anguish’ Effect: forecasts war- Hitler’s rise due to poverty in Germany, triplet to emphasise violence
