A level maths to degree maths transition.

Hi! I’m considering doing a degree in mathematics with the open university. I got an A in A-Level maths in summer 2024 but did not take further maths. I’m wondering what content I should go over/ if not taking further maths will be detrimental to my beginning. I know there’s two different start options at the OU and if I should take the more advanced one. Any tips from others studying this degree? Thanks

As the open university has no entry requirements, the modules start pretty easy on the default path: MU123 is about a GCSE level and MST124 is A-Level maths level. I haven't done MST125 or M140, but I would imagine they would be quite fun.

Honestly if it were me, I would do the intensive start - the content in MU123 isn't really worth it unless you really haven't touched mathematics in forever (I bought the books online and blasted through them before I started MST124).

However doing the intensive start opens the question of which module you would want to do instead (of which there are a few which require MU123 to be done prior lol)...

Thank you!! I just wanted to know where the A-Level crossover was really. Def think I’ll do the intensive.

Just so you know, the "free" L1 30 credits module in the intensive start can even be exchanged for L2 or L3 modules. You'd just need to ask for permission. So if there's any fancy L3 module you want to do but will be all out of credits, you can do it later
