That depends on what you mean by music teacher here. Do you mean a classroom secondary school music teacher? Or do you mean someone teaching someone to play a particular instrument? (Which would be a private, or peripatetic/visiting, music teacher)

Hi Max,

to become a private music teacher you do not need any formal qualifications, just a passion and a talent for music. If you are thinking of becoming a UK based secondary school teacher there are certain qualifications you must have. Firstly, you usually are required to have a subject specific undergraduate degree, so in this case you would need a music related undergraduate degree. Secondly, to teach in a state funded UK secondary school you are required to have QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). There are various ways you can obtain QTS, some chose to do a PGCE course which you complete after your undergraduate degree and some chose to do a combination undergraduate with QTS course. In your case you may want to look into undergraduate degree such as Music with QTS. If you are interested in becoming a teacher I would recommended getting as much experience working with children, voluntary or paid, as possible. This will give you a head start and help your CV and university application stand out. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Tilly.
