EPQ and reduced offers

Hi,

I am in year 12 and planning to do an EPQ to get a reduced offer at uni (russell group). I struggle in exams and am stronger at coursework so I think it would benefit me.

My school does it in year 13 though. I am not sure if I start in September whether that means I will have time to complete the process get it marked and get the grade back by ucas uni application deadline in january?

Or if you haven’t got the grade back by then can the uni make a reduced offer (if you told them you were in the process of doing an EPQ in the personal statement) on the condition that by results day you’ve got your EPQ grade back and it is whatever is required?

Was anyone else in this situation?

hello, you don't get your EPQ grade back until August, as I believe it is on your results sheet, the same as your A Level results
^^^at least that's what I've been told
when I applied (I'm in y13, I did early entry in September), I just put that the grade was pending, same as my courses
hope this helps!!

Thank you so much!! Were you in the process of doing your epq or had you finished at that point?? Did you get a reduced offer because you said you were doing one? The uni I want to apply to has a reduced offer if you get an A in the EPQ (which I’m planning to do) so I am not sure how I will get that reduced offer I haven’t got the grade back yet and I’m still doing it??

Hiya! I highly doubt you will have the grade back by January, (I didn’t and we started ours in year 12). But universities still gave me reduced offers with my EPQ grade “pending”. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Firstly congrats on getting an offer! When you wrote your personal statement did you just let them know you were in the process of doing an EPQ/had submitted your EPQ or did you give them a predicted grade?

It wont be a 'reduced offer' - just an alternative offer that will still require 3 A level grades .... and a high grade EPQ. As an example, at Birmingham the offer would be only one grade lower in a non-essential A level subject plus a grade A in the EPQ. So it isnt a lower offer at all, it actually involves far more work than just doing 3 A levels.

I basically said what my EPQ was about and what I’d learned from the process. It’s actually not good practice to give a predicted grade for EPQ because it’s marked by the school itself (or at least that’s what UCAS told my centre coordinator when they asked).
