What is better? Law or law with criminology

Hi,

Im a year 13 student currently applying to study law with the goal of being a solicitor. Ive already received 2 offers to study law LLB (university of sheffeild and liverpool). Ive received an email from the university of york stating i have been unsucessfull in my application to study law however i am able to choose an alternative course to apply to. The only course that i have any intest in is law with criminology however i am unsure as to weather i should persue this or choose only law at another university

Sorry for the long explination, thank you for reading this any advice would be amazing

Congratulations! Sheffield and Liverpool are very good law schools. You will not regret going to either one.

I believe your passion goes to law. Have you ever think of practising criminal law? There is no point doing law with criminology if you have not think of it.

In the end you can only firm one among Sheffield, Liverpool, and if you get offer from York. There is no need to get York's offer for a course that you are not interested in.

Students sometimes assume incorrectly that criminology is related to the practice of criminal law. It isn't. Criminology is a branch of sociology which studies the causes of crime, patterns of crime, and societal responses to crime. It's a perfectly valid subject to study, but expertise in criminal law comes first from studying criminal law and then from training and practice as a criminal lawyer.

I got the same email from York. I applied to international human rights law and i can now choose to apply to an alternative course and suggested law with criminology. Im a bit nervous now cuz i applied to uni of Nottingham for law so they’ll probably reject me cuz it was higher on the rankings but oh well.

Hi there,

Both Law (LLB) and Law with Criminology can lead to a career as a solicitor, so the decision really depends on what interests you most and what will help you stay motivated throughout your degree. Since your goal is to qualify as a solicitor, it’s worth considering that a straight Law LLB is the most traditional route and is widely recognised by law firms. It will cover all the foundational legal subjects needed for further qualification, like the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE).

Law with Criminology can still get you to the same destination, but it includes additional criminology modules, which may mean slightly less focus on core legal topics. If you have a strong interest in criminology and think it will enhance your learning experience, it could be a good option. However, if your primary focus is qualifying as a solicitor and keeping your degree as widely applicable as possible, sticking with a standard Law LLB (like your offers from Sheffield and Liverpool) might be the better choice.

If York is a university you’re particularly drawn to, it could be worth accepting their offer and ensuring the course still meets all necessary qualifying law degree requirements. Otherwise, you have strong offers already, and either Sheffield or Liverpool will provide you with a solid legal education and good career prospects. Ultimately, choose the option that aligns best with your long-term goals and interests!
