Architecture at RGU

Hey! I currently study on the BSc/MArch course at the University of Edinburgh and I'm having an awful time. I'm looking at transferring next year. I'm leaning towards RGU but could do with some advice or opinions on whether this is a good option or not. Can anyone tell me about their experience with the course, people, facilities and the campus? Thanks x

Hi, I’m a mum of a first year architecture student and they are loving RGU. The year group numbers are small approx 40. There is an architecture club that meets once a week, always guest speakers can go for food/drinks afterwards. A mentor program - matched with an external professional. There is a lot of practical work in the studio.

Here is what my student said - lecturers are helpful, campus easy to navigate, interact with other years, everyone talks to each other, will give extensions if needed, computer lab and own workshop.

We visited Edinburgh’s open day where it felt very impersonal (so busy parents weren’t allowed on the tour or listen to the presentation) whereas RGU was very different, the whole uni was welcoming, lecturers chatted, the Dean invited us to email him if we needed to ask anything, we could wander freely around the school. Completely different vibe.

Hope this helps. If you want to ask anything else, please do x

Thank you so much! I'm also wondering what the course demands financially outside of living costs. In Edinburgh everything is really really expensive and the uni offer little supplies. Would I still be expecting to spend a lot for course materials? Do you have any perspectives on accommodation, I'm wondering if RGU's halls would be good, even just for the experience, or if I should look elsewhere?

My student has probably spent about £100 over the year but this includes pens, paints etc. that will be used next year.
RGU halls are dated but still popular. There are quite a few private hall options that are very reasonably priced. When choosing accommodation I would consider the journey to and from the uni. It can take over 30 minutes on the bus to reach the city centre.

Hi, I am sorry to hear that you are having a hard time at edinburgh university, The course and the campus are amazing at rgu, however, some of the facilities is a different story completely. What about edinburgh university causing you to have an awful time if you don't mind me asking?

You can go online and talk to student ambassadors from rgu that are also doing your course to tell you about their experiences.
