Bath or Liverpool for architecture?

I’m struggling to choose between uni of Bath and uni of Liverpool for my architecture undergrad.
Would Bath give me better employment prospects because its a BSc rather than BA like at Liverpool?
Is Bath nightlife and party scene as bad as people say? Will I get bored and not enjoy the uni experience?
If I go to Liverpool, will I end up not being able to find a placement?

If anyone did architecture at either of these unis and is willing to reach out and chat with me I’d really appreciate it.

Feel free to give your opinions on which uni choice you think is better.

As far as I know, BSc and BA usually don't matter as much when it comes to architecture. I'm not as sure about Liverpool, but Bath is highly ranked in the UK (if something like prestige is a factor for you) and is a much more technical course, focusing a lot on the practicalities of architecture. A thing that also sets it apart from other architecture courses is how you get a placement year, which means you get experience before you finish your course - this would help inform your studies better and also possibly improve your chances at getting a placement as a graduate.

In terms of nightlife, I heard that it's not as good as places like Liverpool, but it's definitely still there (albeit smaller as it's a smaller city). I doubt you'd get bored due to this, and honestly, with how gruelling the majority of architecture courses are, I doubt you'd get much opportunity to party a lot. Though if you do plan on going out a lot, Liverpool may be more to your taste. Bath is great for sports though, so if that's something you'd consider alongside your studies as well as partying, I'd recommend that.

If you go to Liverpool, it doesn't automatically rule you out from getting a placement - so many things come into play when applying for placements, like location, etc, so you can definitely still get placements if you're a competitive enough candidate. Employers may be more familiar with Bath, though, so you might want to consider that potentially.

Overall, the course content and vibe should speak to you the most. Personally, I would pick Bath over Liverpool, but there's so much more to consider for your specific situation, so take this with a grain of salt. Good luck and don't sweat it too much! I'm sure you'll enjoy either of them

Hiya Izabela!

Apologies I'm coming to your thread a bit late - just wanted to share my experience as a former Bath student to see if it could help in any way.

As has been said, the most important thing is the course content - which course out of Bath VS Liverpool has modules which capture your interest more? Also, if you've had the chance to visit the campuses, which feels most like home? Where could you betters see yourself?

Bath as a uni and a city is lovely and I genuinely really enjoyed my time studying and being here. The city is one of the safest in the country, we have one of the best supported placement schemes in the country, and theres a surprising amount to do for its relatively small size.

A few things that I'd say about our architecture course (besides the fact that we're super-proud of it!) are that yes, it is quite technical, and there is a lot of variety in what you get to work on. The architect students here also work quite closely with the civil engineer students on joint projects like you would in the real world as an architect so I personally would find this enjoyable - you'll be bringing your skills to group projects quite early on! I would also say that architecture gives you plenty of time at the start of your degree (first few years) to experiment and find your style before your work begins to be assessed and count towards your degree.

I hope this helps a bit but let us know if you have any questions!

@University of Liverpool Student Rep have you anything to add? 🙂

Hi, final year architecture student at Bath here. Bath is a very practical course, it will make you better prepared for real life in an architecture practice (focusing on structural and environmental elements as well as design which I really like). Having a placement really helps develop your skills which you can use in your degree. Bath is also such a nice city. The architecture is stunning. Great mix of city and countryside which is nice to escape to after deadlines. Also I really like the nightlife is bath, enough clubs, loads of bars and pubs with a good student vibe - and importantly for me feels very safe! But there’s more than the night life, Christmas market and ice skating in the winter, bbqs in Victoria park and drinks at royal crescent in the summer. Obviously you can tell I’m biased when I say pick bath
