Hey! What exam board are u doing? I did my mandarin GCSE last year with AQA so it might be relevant or might not. Personally what helped me was recording my speaking questions and then practicing speaking back to them . For reading I just did lots of practice and for writing I tried memorising paragraphs but in the end just learnt some phrases and idioms to use to boost my writing. Luckily I had a small class and a really helpful teacher. Good luck! Let me know if u have any questions!

Pattern recognition is pretty helpful, as many characters do share common parts, which means something related to the characters. Also, years of practice, I remeber teacher made us write a new character at least 20 times then memorised it, kinda like learning by rote.

Hey! I picked theme 2 because I absolutely hate it and didn’t want to risk getting it for photo card because I wouldn’t be able to say much. After that, I just revised the general conversation questions tons and hoped for the best lol.

What structures did you use?

Hi! I tried to chuck things like these in:
- 虽然…但是
- 太…了
- 如果…就
- 又…又
etc

I also tried to find idioms that I could use, especially for my writing.
If you search for mandarin structures on quizlet, you should be able to find some useful stuff.

Ohhh I use those structures aswell. But what do you mean by idioms?

Oops sorry, I never saw your reply for some reason. Like these:
万事开头难 everything is hard in the beginning
磨杵成针 sharpening an iron bar into a needle but basically means perseverance brings success
井底之蛙 frog in a well - someone who lacks perspective

So for character meaning or if I don’t know how to write a character, i use an app called Pleco. It’s really useful for learning what characters mean or finding ones you don’t know. then for writing, do a lot of past paper questions. try to memorise higher level vocabulary if you want a top grade and remember STPMVO for sentence order - Subject, Time, Place, Manner, Verb, Object. Also add a lot of idioms! (here are some idioms - 车水马龙 - che shui ma long which means traffic or bustling/busy, 人山人海 - ren shan ren hai which means crowded or many people, 五颜六色 - wu yan liu se which means colourful and 色香味俱全 - se xiang wei ju quan which means really delicious or food with colour, flavour and aroma.) Make sure you also use sentence structures like …比… for comparison and 又…又… for adjectives! For speaking, find a speaking booklet with questions that are most frequently asked in GCSE and try to plan an answer for all of them. Make the ones for your chosen topic more advanced. You could also memorise how to write the speaking questions and just copy them down in your writing if you get a topic that relates. If you want to practice speaking, record yourself saying the questions in mandarin, then play them and try to answer out loud. For reading, just try to memorise most of the words in the spec. Reading is just to test your knowledge of characters. You might not know all the characters, but try to focus on the ones the questions are asking about. For the poem, you might not know what some characters mean, so try to use the radicals to work out meaning. In general after all this, do some past papers, and try to learn a new word or phrase everyday. Hope this helps!
