University Sport

In university when you join a sports club is it expected that you've played the sport before and are like good at it, I want to do baseball at university but I've only played softball in secondary school a few times. So is it a dead dream to play a sport at uni if I'm not already experienced.

You'll find that sports clubs at uni often have members with a wide range of experience. Some will have none (or almost none) and other will have loads.

Hi There!
It's great that you're reaching out about this.
It should be possible for you to play whichever sport you want to play. Sometimes there are tryouts, and sometimes there are different teams for different experience such as an armature team or a professional team that plays in competitions.
For example, the dance teams at LJMU hold two sessions a week, one for those who enjoy dancing and another for competitive training for the professional dancers.
It would be worth researching the clubs and societies at the university you want to attend. Most student groups have some sort of social media account that you can reach out and ask these questions for clarity.
Hope this helps.

Hiya there,

Speaking from a particularly sporty uni here - experience is absolutely not necessary. Uni is the perfect time to try out something wholly new. I had a really good friend in my first year who tried Brazilian Jiu Jitzu for the first time ever and ended up going to the club, honing her skill and enjoying it so much she actually ended up reaching regional level and competing in tournaments. Here at Bath we offer sports clubs for people at all levels and especially encourage those who want to try something new. So no, your wish to do baseball is absolutely realistic and it sounds like it'd be a great thing for you to take up 🙂

I hope this helps! Best of luck this year.

Hi!

It is common to find a range of experience among university sports teams. I know many people who have come to uni and continued the sport they have played since childhood, and many others who wanted to try something completely new. Often within a sports club there are teams for different abilities, you may attend a 'trial' session and then be allotted into a team with others of a similar ability.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

Hi there,

I know you have received lots of responses to this but I thought I could respond too just from the perspective of another uni to others that have replied!

In my experience, there will be a wide range of club available for you to join and these will range from more experienced to just social clubs. At Hallam, we have lots of different sports teams and there are some which are competitive teams which you have to try out for and usually having prior experience will help you to make it onto this team. Even in some of these sports, such as basketball we have different teams - e.g. mens 1's, mens 2's and mens 3's which are different skill levels.

There are then also social clubs which are for anyone and you don't have to have any experience to join them! These are usually just for fun, but there are sometimes some competitions within these too.

I would say join any that you like the sound of!

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂

Hello,

Don't worry the university sports clubs don't expect you to have experience of the sport - I learned badminton at university as an undergrad and I had never ever played before, I didn't even know the rules properly and it was all explained and taught. The sports clubs will consist of people who are at different experience levels, some might be beginners like you, others could be pros but it really doesn't matter at all, everyone is accommodated there.

At the Freshers' Fair right at the beginning of the uni year you will be able to meet all the students' union clubs and societies and sign up to join all the ones that you are interested in. This is a brilliant way to meet people who have like minded interests as you too.
