I’m not sure what to do

I have 3 offer so far and I’m still expecting 2. I don’t know what to do, I feel like I know nothing so far for Business A level. I genuinely don’t know what to do with myself, if I missed my offers - I don’t have any family, I don’t have a private life, I don’t speak to anyone at my school because my sixth form is split in 2 and I was put in the girls school, I can not for the life of me remember anything from Business or Biopsychology and the problem is that I have offer from top 10-15 unis in law. I don’t know what to do, I feel like I cheated the system, to get my teachers to give me high predicted grades so I can apply to these unis and now I’m here. I don’t know what to do with myself - I can’t take a gap year, because I’m 18 and in the care of the local authority, who wants me to live alone, I can’t go into clearing because I can’t afford to go to a uni where I might end up living the life I currently am, and I don’t want to work because I don’t want my life to amount to working at Primark for the rest of my life. I so scared.

Hi,

Navigating university offers, choosing between them and making big decisions about your future while studying for your A-levels is a big challenge. I completely understand the pressures and stress that you might be going through at the moment and I hope you are well🙂

Which universities have you applied for? And which have you received offers for so far?
While you feel you may have 'cheated the system', teachers give predicted grades based on grades they think students can achieve based on recent assessments etc, so I would give yourself some credit at least! I don't think teachers can overstate predicted grades for students to get them into top universities, as this wouldn't benefit the student. As you have said you have some offers already, it seems to me that you are more than enough capable 😊

Which A-levels/BTEC's are you sitting? You mentioned you are finding it hard to remember your Business and Biopsychology teaching. How is revision going for your exams? It's okay to be honest!🙂

Have you tried reaching out to any teachers, tutors, or the support teams at your school to express your worries? I know it can be really difficult to open up to others about worries etc, however, I think it might be a good idea to speak to someone about your worries and see if there is any support or advice available to you- it's better than bottling it all up!

Sorry for all of the questions! But if you feel comfortable answering I can give you the best advice I can🙂 I'm also happy to private message if you would prefer to🙂

Best wishes,
Josie

I try to answer all the questions:
- I applied to Exeter,QMUL,Nottingham,Warwick and Oxford. I’ve got an offer from Exeter, QMUL and Nottingham. I applied to Oxford foundation year and am expecting to get back to me by the end of this week.
- I take Business, Psychology and Sociology A level, all of which are AQA.
-Revision is going horribly, I’ve got a revision plan that I don’t really stick to. If it’s time to revise Business, I might feel like revising Psychology, which means I just end up revising Psychology way more often than Business.
- I can’t reach out to anyone at my school. If I do they will contact my legal guardian (the state) and let them know that I will not do great. Everyone assumed that I won’t do great in my mocks and then I got alright results, I can’t have people believing that I’m not smart.

Hi,
Thank you for getting back to me 🙂

All of those universities sound amazing! Best of luck for your Oxford offer!🎓️
Are you excited to go to university? It might be worth reaching out to reps here on the Student Room or on unibuddy to see what it's like to study at each other those universities- this will help you decide which one you want to firm, and might get you feeling excited about university of you're a bit unexcited or unsure at the moment🙂

I took Psychology, Sociology and Criminology at A-level, so let me know if you would like any tips for studying those subjects😊 They are quite content heavy! But the content was interesting to me. it a subject you enjoy revising?

I never took Business, so unfortunately I don't have any top tips for revision. However, I had subjects which I preferred studying at A-level so completely understand going off timetable and wanting to revise something else.

Have you tried different revision methods for business which might motivate you to revise more? Maybe flashcards?

It's always worth seeing if there are some readily available revision methods for Business, and Psychology and Sociology too (from teachers of the AQA websites). Having some resources already made can get you started!

You could also try gradually increasing the time you revise business for. You could start with half an hour, and then do some Psychology, and then come back to Business for another half an hour or twenty minutes towards the end of the day. At least this way you would be getting little bits done to get you started.

Does your school have run revision sessions? Or have a library/quiet space where you could spend some time revising after school? Having a space like the school library to revise at a certain time without distraction helped me to get things done.

I found myself lacking motivation or revising one subject more than another at the start, but I started being a little bit more disciplined and strict with myself with revision. I gave myself a sweet treat or a few hours at the weekend/evening to so something I enjoyed once I had completed the revision I needed to- This motivated me to get things done.

I also knew I needed certain grades to get into my course, so this spurred me on too.

There are some cool revision apps for students too that I've only just come across. There's even one where when you revise you can feed/look after your virtual pet cat!- If you're someone who struggles a bit with motivation, apps like this might help🙂

A-levels are tough, I know I've been there! But with a bit of discipline, and being a bit stricter with revision timetables, I'm sure you will get there! 😊

I'm sorry that you don't feel you can reach our to your school. I know you might be apprehensive about reaching out to them, but schools have support networks and services for students for a reason, so I'm sure they would be there to support you 🙂

There is a series of pages on the UCAS website dedicated to care experienced students, and there are some contacts for support at the bottom of this page. Some of the contacts are there for students to receive support about university e.g. moving in, settling in, and student finance, and some provide a service for students to express any worries or concerns about starting university.

Seems as you got good grades in your mocks, and have been given good predicted grades for the universities you have applied for- I think you should give yourself a little bit more credit! 😊 Being smart has lots of different meanings, and I don't think I could even tell you exactly what it means. But I know it doesn't always mean having straight A's and A*s, it can include having a great skillset too. I understand the pressure of getting the highest grades and meeting others expectations, however, as long as you are doing your best and are enjoying what you are doing, I would say that it doesn't matter what others think! 🙂

I hope this helps! 😊
Best wishes for your exams and university! Have confidence in yourself and your abilities!- you sound like a smart cookie to me!🍪😊

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best wishes,
Josie
