What uni with BB grade only Bio and Maths?

Hi all, quick question from my son who just got some results. He is in his final ALevel year and took Bio, Chem and Maths, in addition to French.

His Chem teacher is telling him to drop it as his results for AS and unit 4 are really not good (C to E) so he would have to resit all AS units plus 4, as well as doing units 5 and 6 in June.

If he drops it, that would leave him with only Bio and Maths, since French is not really considered if you want to do a stem degree? He should be getting BB for those and A or A* for French.

Any idea whether he can still go forward with a biology related degree somewhere? Would only 2 relevant A levels be sufficient? He was really keen on doing something more chem oriented but is going to have to drop that idea no matter what I guess....

Many thanks

Hello. It is very very recommend to take bio and chem and another a level like maths a science related a level for like unis like Cambridge and Oxford.
usually unis will need bio and chem together like Manchester uni for a bio degree but it is rare that you would fine this and I do not recommend you to drop the chem. if no possible solutions pick another science like maths or physics or any hard sciences.

You can do bio chem and french if you would like but do not drop chem. what was ur sons gcse grades ?

He has got Maths already, so would be going in with Bio, Maths and French. His Chem, if he doesn't resit any more, would put him around a D overall so not sure this would be very helpful? His GCSE results were a mix of 7 and 8, I can't remember the exact proportion.

If he secures AAAs in maths bio and French and doing a bio degree then that is fine just not recommended

Bio, Maths and French would be fine for many Bio-related degrees - Unis usually only specify two A Level subjects for STEM degrees, and therefore for the 3rd subject its only the actual grade that is important. And if he wants to do a degree with Study Abroad, French would be perfect.

Examples from Bristol :

Biological Sciences | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol :
Biology, Plant Science, Zoology etc - "AAA including Biology and another science-related subject from Chemistry; Computer Science; Economics; Electronics; Environmental Sciences; Further Mathematics; Geography; Geology; Mathematics; Physics; Psychology; and Statistics."

BSc Neuroscience | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol
AAA including two core science/mathematics subjects. Core science/mathematics subjects include: Psychology, Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (or Further Mathematics).

BSc Physiological Science | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol
AAB including two core science/mathematics subjects from Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (or Further Mathematics), Psychology, Physical Education.

BSc Applied Anatomy | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol
ABB including two science subjects, at least one of which must be a core science from Biology (or Human Biology); Chemistry; Mathematics (or Further Mathematics); and Physics. Science subjects also include: Environmental Science; Geography; Geology; Psychology; Physical Education; and Marine Science.

Thank you, he is likely to end up with ABB (the A being the French), so most of those would be out of range. But for Bristol for example, are you saying that they would not require the A to be one of the core sciences?

Exeter would also be OK

For all Unis, what is stated in the 'entry requirements' is what they mean. 'AAB including Maths' means exactly that. If they want a specific grade it would be worded as 'AAB including A in Maths' etc.

Look at Unis like Sussex, Kent, UEA, Plymouth etc
